Rob Ketterling writes with clarity, humility, and humor....all of which makes this book a great read. Questions at the end of each chapter help you process the information from each chapter. Change is NEVER easy....if it is, it probably isn't real change. While this book does not minimize the pain of real change, it does help you identify and overcome the barriers to real change. Take the challenge to change before you have to in order to make the most of the opportunities life presents.

I really benefitted from reading this book. It is not always a "feel-good" book, as you are confronted with areas in your life that need to change- I certainly was. At the same time, Rob's encouraging, straight-to-the heart assessment of the need for change in order to live the life we are meant to live is a breath of fresh air in the normally stale air of stagnancy.
I especially appreciate that it is, in essense, written like Rob preaches. I thank the editors for not editting "him" out. Also, I really like that the key points are bulleted at the end of each chapter as well as questions to discuss in a group or journal on your own.
My only question for the book is this: why is Celebrate Recovery omitted from the resources in the back?? It is mentioned in the book, but no informstion on how to contact them. It is a program for a multitude of issues- alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, etc. It is a nationwide organization and you can find information at [...].

Most of us do not want to change, but then to be challenged with changing before we need to is an eye opener. We all know we have issues that we don't want to correct, but we must if we are to grow and be effective in the kingdom.

Adapting and changing are key components of growing and thriving. Change is often difficult. Real change takes dedication and persistence. Ketterling challenges the reader to not delay positive change, no matter how difficult it may seem. Changing because you have to can be too late or suffer from ill motive. Changing before you have to, however, keeps your motivation in line with the desired outcome. The author's challenge made me weigh the difficult changes I need to make and establish a plan for making them. It's time to change, and this is the book I needed!

Book Description:

What will it take for you to change? We've all heard it said, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions" and we all know good intentions won't cause us to change. For most of us, however, it takes a crisis, a tragedy, a pain so great that change is actually forced upon us. By then, it’s way too late. But what if… what if you could find the strength to change before the pain, before the crisis, before the tragedy? What if you could change before you have to? In this book, Change Before You Have To, I'll give you the keys I've found that can help you change your relationships, your weight, your job, your finances, and your emotional and spiritual state before the crisis; before you have to. No more excuses, no more good intentions, it’s time to change and live life to the fullest!

In this motivating book, Pastor Rob Ketterling starts off with a bang by sharing how the book idea formed. In a casual conversation he remarked how much work he'd have ahead of him if he were suddenly a widower in need of a new wife. His wife, very much alive, asked, why wait to make a change for someone not even real when you could be changing for the love of your life. It hit him hard and he realized most of us change when we need to. But few change before.

The author gives examples from his own life as a Little Debbie snack cake fan trying to get in shape. He also uses statistics, Biblical examples, and stories to drive home points to inspire change. The chapters are short and each one has bullet points at the end to summarize. There are discussion questions, too.

“I remember the feedback I received after I publicly admitted I needed to make a change. Someone told me, ‘Really? Pastor Rob, you’re so disciplined in every area of your life.

This book is a little long in getting to the point, yet I did enjoy it. I use the questions for discipleship class discussions.
