Format: Paperback
This book isn't perfect, but it's one the best I've read on enabling change.

It's one of the best because it takes an approach that focuses on the person at an individual level, and therefore enables leaders of change to work with people in the way they are individually reacting to change. My personal experience with numerous change initiatives have taught me that while strategic approaches have their value, true change occurs when you meet people where they are, not collectively, with an assumption that everyone is moving through change at the same pace and in the same way. The practical advice in this book will help anyone facilitate change.

It's not perfect. The authors use an approach that still categorizes persons undergoing change rather than helping us treat each person as unique. While perhaps useful as a way of discussing the various ways people respond to change and in simplifying the complexities of human thinking, it risks not going far enough in treating each person as a unique individual. In addition, the authors wait till near the end to bring all the pieces together. I was continuously thinking about how each new idea fit with the others, but the book didn't give me any guidance in my thinking. A more systemic style might work better, integrating each piece with the previous ones as the approach evolves in the reader's mind.

But these imperfections only detract minimally from the value of this book, and can easily be upgraded in future additions -- which I have no doubt will be forthcoming. This is truly a unique and useful book!

Wendy Mack and Myron Radio provide a much needed guide for business leaders who suddenly find themselves navigating the turbulent waters of accelerating change. When change is not an option, you have to get it right the first time or risk being overtaken by the rapid currents of our unprecedented times. "Change at the Core: Unleash Your Team's Energy to Drive Results" outlines common sense thinking and practical methods for closing the change gap that permeates many businesses. Mack and Radio define this gap as "the difference between what a leader is picturing and what the people are actually doing." Closing the gap means aligning vision with action. But as many managers are discovering, especially in these fast-changing times, that's more easily said than done.

Mack and Radio poignantly observe that leading change is something you do with people - and not to them. If you need your team's wholehearted commitment, you need to understand that the only way that you can leverage their energy is "to light a fire within people, not under them." This book shows leaders how they can power change from within, by unleashing the internal energy of every person on their teams, whether a top executive or a front line contributor. Mack and Radio's proven methods take the pain out of change by building a powerful collaboration between the top line and the front line and aligning vision with action. If you have a change gap that you need to close now, this book is for you.

This is a MUST read for anyone involved in change efforts--either as participants in as well as those leading change initiatives.

There are numerous books that discuss change at the macro level but then fall short on how to make change happen. As anyone who has been involved in change initiatives knows, change is easy to talk about but in reality challenging to make it happen. This books show the how.

As someone who has lead as well as participated in numerous change efforts - in the private sector, the federal government as well as an entrepreneur, I wish I had this available to me earlier in my career.

The book is easy to read, provides a clear actionable process, and contains numerous very rich examples of how many in business settings have applied and benefited by this revolutionary approach in successfully implementing change efforts.

"Today, being bright and talented isn't enough. One must also know how to navigate and survive in a world governed by constant and at times, barbaric change." This quote came from "Without Warning" by Rodney Johnson, and it captures the essence of "Change at the Core." Change inside any organization is easy to talk about, difficult to implement. There are plenty of books about the process, this book gets at the core of how to find the intrinsic talent inside an organization and then how to organize and unleash it. "Change at the Core" is essential reading. And given today's challenging economic times, "Change at the Core" is timely, as organizations are forced to change quickly.
