About the Author

Just about all of us want to get away from the demands of everyday life from time to time. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the luxury of being able to take off to some new, exciting place whenever we feel the urge--unless we like to read. A book can take us anywhere we’d like to go. For readers who enjoy living vicariously in pastimes or in modern times Fran Shaff provides a great escape in the more than twenty novels she’s published over the years. Fran’s fictional books have won awards from readers, reviewers and fellow authors, and her non-fiction has been acknowledged in this way too. Love is the main focus of all of Fran’s books, whether they’re contemporary or historical, serious or humorous, written for adults or teens. Love between men and women and among friends and families is featured in her books because there is nothing most of us want more than to love and be loved. Happy endings abound, but the journey to reaching that joyful final moment is always a rocky struggle, just the way we want our fiction (even though we could do without the drama in our real lives). Look for new, full-length historical romance novels from Fran Shaff in the ten-book “Tender Mysteries Series,” available now and debuting throughout 2013 and 2014. The first novel in the series “Resurrected” is available as a free download at most Internet bookstores. The series is available in single e-book and two-pack paperback formats. Happy Ending to a great book.
Pauline McDonald
Also, the author tries to make her point about Zack not wanting to go with his aunt and the reason for this over, and over, and over.
Terry A Nichols
I would definitely recommend this book to those who love a good romance.

Format: Paperback
Marietta Randolph lives in Chicago, where it's civilized. Her rebel sister, Kathy and her husband are ruthlessly murdered by savages, leaving their son, Zack alone with only his uncle Jase in the heathen territory of Nebraska. Since Marietta is Zack's aunt, and named on paper as Zack's guardian if anything happened to Kathy or her husband, she travels to Fort Kearney in order to claim her nephew from his uncle who has been taking care of the boy.

Jason Kent's brother, Clint was married to Kathy. Jason had helped in the birthing room when Zack was born. He has been a major part of Zack's life since his birth and took him into his home after discovering the bodies of Zack's parents. Jason loves Zack like his own child, but he has big dreams of starting up his own town on the Oregon Trail.

After traveling more than two hundred miles in a rickety stagecoach, Marietta arrives in Nebraska where she is met by Jason Kent. Zack was taking a nap when Jase left to pick her up so he'd come alone. Originally Marietta had stated that she wishes the pick up Zack and be on their way back to Chicago as soon as possible so Jason arranged for them to be on a returning stagecoach the following day, since Marietta intends to pay her respects at her sister's grave site the return trip must be delayed. Marietta's trip to the grave site also causes a problem with Jason's meeting up with a group of men to discuss his land project. When it's compounded by snow that forces the three of them to find shelter in a shack on the edge of Jason's property for several days, they find they share more in common than just one small boy and enjoy each other's company. After waiting out the storm and returning to Fort Kearney, they are told that there won't be another stagecoach for several weeks.

This book was offered to Kindle for free. However, it is really a sample, and not a complete book. I wouldn't mind that if I had known up front, and would not have ordered it. Since I'm new to the Kindle world, I guess I'll have to figure out which (free) books are truly complete books. If the free books are all samples, I'll stick with library books. I read a lot of books so it is more economical to read free and library offered books when available. I'll be very disappointed if there are not that many truly free books.

Fran Shaff's Change of Heart was a waste of time. The dialogue was stilted and off-putting. Small children don't talk the way the author has Zack communicating. Also, the author tries to make her point about Zack not wanting to go with his aunt and the reason for this over, and over, and over. I got it the first time. We never find out what happened to Zack's parents until way into the story...and then there is no clarification other than they were murdered by savages. That's it! No comment on why or whether there was any effort to bring their murderers to justice. The author never makes her case for a real love growing between the main characters and many of the "supporting cast" have no reason for being or for moving the story forward, like the traveling companion on the stagecoach. The author expects us to just take her word for it on so many things. "Kathy was well loved." Really? Why? Nothing seemed to come together in this story. I hated the concept that Marietta had nothing to go back to in Chicago and that Zack seemed to have nothing, either. What happened to his parents ranch? Too many lose ends. And no wrapping up. This was not a believable story and it shed no light on the times or the people in an edifying way.

It's free and historical fiction is my favorite genre. The historical part is done well.
However, it's fairly obvious what will happen from the beginning (even from the title), and the main character, Marietta, is incredibly selfish and only concerned about her happiness, and not the happiness of her orphaned nephew. So it's difficult to like her and it gets to the point where the book becomes difficult to read because of it.

I loved this book, but like another reviewer, I wish it had been longer. Not that I felt something was missing from the story, I just didn't want it to end. I'll definitely look for more books from Ms Shaff.

Upon the death of her sister and her husband, Marietta Randolph travels from Chicago to a small frontier town in Nebraska to pick up her four-year old nephew, Zack.

She is welcomed by the boy's uncle, Jason Kent, who has been raising the boy since the death of his parents and loves him like a son. Marietta is scheduled to leave immediately but delays her departure in order to visit her sister's grave. She is then trapped in a cottage with Zack and Jason by a snow storm and is forced to reconsider her travel plans.

It is a sweet story, a bit too sweet for my taste. Everybody is a nice as can be : even the four year old is well-behaved and obedient. Nothing is said of the dangers of residing on the edge of civilization nor of the difficult and life-threatening situations the pioneers had to struggle through. Meanwhile, Marietta's reasons for returning to Chicago are written as superficial and impersonal.

I would recommend it to a teenage audience as there is nothing going on beyond kissing.
