Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Whether you are launching new information technology, applying an innovative work process or completing a merger transaction, effective change management is essential to your success. Leaders and project teams must understand the human dynamics of change and prepare for the emotional response it can generate. As leaders, you must manage the complex technical aspects of business changes while considering:

- The impact of change on individuals, teams, leaders and organizations,
- New roles, behaviors, capabilities and skills required,
- Potential sources of resistance, and
- Strategies to facilitate individual and organizational transition.

To achieve strong business results, you ultimately need people who are committed to success, motivated to get results, and who possess the knowledge and tools to get the job done. People naturally and strongly resist changes to their comfortable routine. New ideas and mindsets about how to work and an individual’s role within the organization can create uncertainty and stress.

Your challenge is to apply effective change management principles to anticipate and manage resistance. By doing so, you can achieve the organization’s ultimate goals to:

- Accelerate the pace of change to achieve timely business outcomes and financial returns,
- Address and mitigate risk,
- Improve decision making,
- Enhance coordination and support long-term business benefits,
- Minimize the short-term dip in employee productivity and increase long-term productivity, and
- Strengthen the dynamic and adaptive responses of the organization and build the organization’s ability to handle change in the future.

The Change Management Pocket Guide provides an excellent toolkit for getting the work of change management done. With practical tips and straightforward tools, there is no longer an excuse for NOT taking action to manage change.

From the Author

Managing change is not rocket science. But it doesn’t just take care of itself either. If anything is going to make your project or change initiative fail, odds are it is going to be a change management issue – alignment, accountability, commitment, etc...

Successful Change Management is the discipline of driving business results by helping individuals and groups change behaviors to implement changes associated with new systems and processes. This guide provides the tools and tips that will put that discipline into action in a meaningful way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but not quite what was expected, March 7, 2007

This review is from: The Change Management Pocket Guide (Spiral-bound)
The change management pocket guide provides some excellent forms for those already familiar with the process. Some forms are obscure and may be less useful. Rather than forms, dedicating some of the guide to step by step procedures would have been more useful. The guide would be highly useful to an HR specialist rather than an engineer trying to develop a method for evaluating how his workforce will be affected by a change.

Overall, this book will be useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy guide to essential skills necessary for change, July 8, 2005

This review is from: The Change Management Pocket Guide (Spiral-bound)
With 20 years managing complex marketing, software and IT projects, I can say with all sincerity that managing change effectively is a critical factor to the success of most projects. This handy little guide has tools to help you plan, conduct and sustain change. As far as I'm concerned, this is a "must have" guide for anyone who manages projects. No fluff, just tools you can put to use immediately. Consultants will appreciate the concise format and that this guide eliminates extraneous theory in favor of concrete, practical tools to get the job done. This is one of those books that you'll wonder how you lived without. If you're new to managing projects or dealing with reistance to change, this guide will step you through the process, remind you what you need to do next, give you clear tips and strategies and tell you when you've achieved a successful outcome. Tons of great information packed into this handy guide. Worth every penny and then some!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action-oriented change management, June 26, 2005

This review is from: The Change Management Pocket Guide (Spiral-bound)
Whether I'm implementing a major process or structural change across my department or seeking general buy-in and support for a new program or message, the tools and tips in this book have become an important part of my approach. The accessible, down-to-earth style of the book takes what most of us think of as the "nice to haves" we don't always have time for and turns them into simple, tangible actions. If you manage people and teams, if motivating and influencing others are critical to your success, then I suggest you buy one for your pocket - and for the pockets of everyone on your team!
