4.0 out of 5 stars despite the title, not a foray into grunge, November 8, 2009
Yes some bands fell into the grungey release trap (dokken etc) but it is not the case for PC69.
Despite the title, this CD is not alt.rock at all - actually Change features the most van-halenish guitar sound ever delivered by PC69, trully enjoyable.
David Readman did not start with the band at the easiest of times, after all Change came out just in the middle of the 90s wasteland when counting crows hootie pearl jam etc. thought they were rockstars thank to a supine audience. However the band held on and kept on delivering the goods, personally I enjoyed everything they put out starting from their following release food for thought and then their majestic crunchy hard rock release duo endangered/electrified. A great band for the ages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Change indeed, December 20, 2007
Things had most definitely changed for melodic hard rockers Pink Cream 69 by the time they released their 1995 album Change. For one thing, original singer Andi Deris had departed for greener pastures, replacing Michael Kiske in the legendary German power metal band Helloween. Another major change is that the kind of melodic hard rock featured on PC69's previous albums had gone out of style in favor of all things "alternative." Those two factors had a lot to do with why Change is almost unrecognizable as a Pink Cream 69 album.

Change is the kind of album that happens when a melodic hard rock band attempts to "go grunge" to keep up with the trends. I don't know if this was due to record company pressure or just a desire to stay relevant, but it's like someone told the band to make their sound a hell of a lot sloppier and hire a guy to do a Chris Cornell impression. That guy, incidentally, was David Readman, who went on to develop one of the most powerful vocal styles in melodic rock and metal. That style, unfortunately, is nowhere to be found here. Neither is the tight and melodic songwriting and production Dennis Ward is so well known for. Not even a cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy can save this album from mediocrity.

Change isn't a bad album, per se. I enjoyed a brief flirtation with grunge, and by those standards it's a decent enough offering. But by PC69 standards this can only be considered an aberration. They continued this unfortunate trend with 1997's Food for Thought before rediscovering the true PC69 sound on the absolutely phenomenal Electrified album.

Bottom line - Change is only for the most die-hard PC69 fans, and even they aren't going to like it very much. Three stars is generous, but I love this band too much to go any lower. There's a reason this one is still out of print.
