Sons are incredible,
By Kelly Jones (South Amherst, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Change (Audio CD)
I purchased the Sons' first album in 1997 and was thouroughly impressed. They immediately became my favorite band. I was wondering when they were going to release a new project and when I saw the Albuquerque single last summer, I bought it as well. I anxiously awaited the release of their self-titled follow-up and was very disappointed to find out that a disagreement with Epic cancelled its release. I didn't even know they had signed on with MCA, let alone released another album, but when I saw "Change", I immediatley purchased it and was not disappointed. The band is even better than before. My personal favorite song on the album is "I Need to Be Wrong Again." It's a great song and the guys really rock on it. "Too Far To Where You Are," "What I Did Right," and "Everbody's Gotta Grow Up Sometime" are great songs as well. The only disappointing thing is that I have yet to hear a song on the radio off this album. However, as country fans know, what radio says is good and what really is good are usually two different things.

Nothing else like it,

I bought this CD because I was a HUGE fan of SOD's first CD Whatever Comes First. When I realized the first CD hadn't left my car in over a year I thought "gee, I must really be a fan" --Change is even better than that CD. Sons have yet to record a bad or even average track. You WILL NOT skip any of these songs. I have the attention span of a gnat and even I don't get tired of these songs. All 11 are executed wonderfully. Drew's voice is one you won't soon forget nor want to -- it is unmistakable and hypnotic. Members Doug, Tim and Scott are equally talented musicians and harmonizers. Sons are superb on every element of a successful song: songwriting, vocalization and musicianship. If you like SOME country but not the usual radio country, get this CD. They have just enough genuine Texas twang to be sincere but not annoying. I only own 12 CDs and two of them are from Sons of the Desert. Like someone else wrote, I don't understand why they aren't more popular -- radio has not been friendly to them because they DON'T sound like LONESTAR thank goodness) and the split 2 years ago with Epic didn't help things. Deserve much more recognition. See them live if you can-- they put on a great show and are great to their fans.

This CD is excellent! When your playing this in your car you can't help but to turn up the volume. One of my personal favorites is "What I Did Right" it is a beautiful song that has a lot of meaning to it. The harmonies are excellent and the lyrics are great. There is not one bad song on this album.

This band is here to stay....,

First of all I don't think Rick Mitchell of Amazon.com owns a country music album anyway, so if we will all disregard his ignorant comments, the world would be a better place. In the two years since "Sons'" first release hit the stores, I've been wondering how they would fair on their sophomore effort, especially on a new label under a new producer. The end result is very impressive with Drew's voice sounding better than ever, as well as an ever deeper variety of songs. I considered the first album outstanding and this one is even better. There is simply not a bad cut on this project. This band will definitely be around when it's all said and done. Rick Mitchell's opinion will not.

Wow! I only just heard Sons of the Desert for the first time as backup to Leann Womack's "I Hope You Dance", but was taken by their talent. So, when I actually heard "What I Did Right" on the radio, while I was on vacation, I knew I had to have this CD, and man, was I right! They have such a beautiful, original, melodic sound that you will never get tired of listening to them. Starting with the first track, "From Goodbye to Hello", I was hooked. It's country without being twangy and so smooth that it's perfect to run in the background of any activity. The title track is poignant and touching without being preachy. I think I might just have to buy another copy. :)

"Change" is good,

While their previous album played it a bit less safe, the production on Change truly sparkles. And they get to show off their beautiful harmonies more on Change. "Albuquerque" is truly spellbinding! It's so crystal clear and a song that equals their great "Leaving October" from the previous album. Many can relate to the why haven't I reached my dream message of "Everybody's Gotta Grow Up Sometime." It strikes a nerve. The arrangements on that one are rock combined with honky-tonk with a chorus sung like a barroom anthem. "Blue Money" and "Real Fine Love" are more up-tempo songs, and they combine substantive issues with wise perspective. More heartfelt vocals can be found throughout the album, with the spare ballad "That's The Kind Of Love You're In" being a great example.

Change is great!,

From beginning to end this is a terriffic CD. Starting off with "Goodbye to Hello" a quirky song about missing their spouses and ending with "Ride" a song about taking the best and forgetting the worst in life, this CD is probably the best one I own. I bought it the day it came out and it has not left the rotation in my CD player since, I recommend the sentimental ballad "What I Did Right" and the repentant "I Need to Be Wrong Again" to anyone thinking of purchasing this disc. Fabulous! There is no other way to describe it.

I bought this CD on a whim because I loved the sound of the background vocals in LeAnn Womack's "I Hope You Dance." After I bought it, I kind of skimmed it, then put it in my CD case. I was in a really busy place then, and the music was good, but it didn't really grab me. Then this summer, on the way back from a drive to the beach, I popped it in the changer. Instantly, my husband and I fell in love with the entire CD. The album is raw with honesty like a Raymond Carver short story. Sons of the Desert's sound is as unique as one can hear these days, the lead singer's voice rich and soulful. My husband said it was the greatest surpise he'd had all summer. I just wish these guys got more playing time. Some of the best tracks haven't been cut yet. Do yourself a favor and get in on S of D right away. You'll be glad you did.

Well I don't need to write a long review, simply it is a great cd that is worth the cost! IT not the usual country cd with steal guitar al over just to say that it is "Country"! There are great songs on here! They don't get a lot of radio play because they are not the regular band that has catchy songs that are jsut fluff! SOD play all the music on this cd, they refused to let studio musicians do it because it would be "their sound"! My fav songs on here that are just great well written songs are, "Albuquerque", "To far to where you are", "I need to be wrong again", "thats the kind of love your in", "real fine love", "ride" and "Change"! I think that you'll be very pleased with this cd! I am!
