Book Description

January 1, 2000
In Change We Must, Nana Veary describes how her family, surroundings and the ways of an innately spiritual people shaped a lifetime search for the truth. At the core, binding the threads of the story, is the practice of silence and a strong belief in its power. From her canoe-building grandfather who used only the trees selected by a native forest bird, to her Christian mother who chanted in Hawaiian to the fish, Nana was set on her course from an early age. It is her journey that unfolds in these pages. Weaving stories and images from her childhood, hard-earned lessons from raising her children and an even wider span of children without a home, Nana shares the metaphysical truths that she applied every day of her life. Nana was a deeply private person and it was difficult for her to recreate and reveal her life, but in typically Hawaiian fashion, she embraces all of us in these pages with a generosity and grace that heals us and guides us home.

The book is illustrated by 16 black & white photographs of Hawaii by award-winning photographer, Franco Salmoiraghi.

About the Author

Nana Veary was born in 1908 and reared by her Hawaiian elders in an environment where language, fishing, healing, building and all aspects of life were firmly rooted in nature. It was a Hawaii in which children planted by the moon and strangers were greeted with reverence. It was a Hawaii where birds, clouds and stones spoke as clearly as people, because the silent language of nature was profoundly understood.

5.0 out of 5 stars A spiritual journey, April 4, 2000

This review is from: Change We Must: My Spiritual Journey (Hardcover)
My name is Hina, and I am the great grand daughter of Hanah Very. Puna (as I call her) gave me my name, and through her book is giving me insight, strength, pride in Hawaiian culture, and a beautiful glimpse into a pure Hawaiians heart. For all of you who don't know, Hawaiians are a dying breed, and their culture is finally earning respect. This book will help you to understand Hawaiians, and understand yourself. Simply written, easy to comprehend, it deals with our relationship to nature, our powers of manifestation, and love as the supreme opener and healer. This book is delightful, insightful, and great for anyone seeking spiritual counsel. Nana will show you how to be quiet and listen to yourself, where all healing takes place.

Brugh Joy (a wonderful Kahuna himself) knew Nana and said that she was such an embodiment of the spirit of ALOHA, that when she would stand before a crowd and merely speak that one word "ALOHA", her spirit was so strong that many in the audience would spontaneously begin weeping with joy. Incredible to imagine...but this marvelous little book captures much of that magic.

I am so happy Nana's book has not disappeared from circulation. I found my first copy at a small bookstore in upcountry Maui a decade or so ago, when it was then out of print. I have been particularly enriched by Nana's wisom regarding silence -- and yes, as she claims, one can begin to understand the language of the natural world if one is silent long enough to listen!!

Enjoy this gem from Kahuna Nana!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too bad there aren't more stars, December 29, 2005
If you are feeling in need of true spiritual inspiration and a look into the heart of aloha, then look no further. This is the type of book that comes along once in a lifetime. I happened across it is a used bookstore a few years ago, and I have never seen its equal. Her writing style is simple and clear, a moving account of her personal journey that also contains amazing insights into Hawaiian culture. BUY THIS BOOK, you won't be dissapointed. In fact, I recommend buying as many copies as possible and giving them away. Everyone I know who has read the book has said that it is at least one of the best books they ever read.
