Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Debunking the belief that one has to be wealthy or influential to help others or start an organization, this enlightening guidebook from activist Perkey, who started a national student service organization from her dorm room, outlines a strategy, mindset, and step-by-step plan for using personal goals, skills and strengths to tackle a specific social problem. Perkey's encouraging, empathetic book is packed with helpful nuts-and-bolts information (from choosing a cause to finding funding) as well as the kind of infectious enthusiasm that makes taking action, breaking down apathy, and overcoming obstacles a rousing prospect. Using her own story alongside case studies of others-like Congressman Tom Perriello, who first served his community as a Boy Scout, or Lisa Spodak, who raised $110,000 for breast cancer research-Perkey showcases the power of one passionate individual armed with determination, a plan and a calling.

"Angela Perkey has taken the concept of 'change the world' to a whole new level. With fresh and passionate language, she has confronted the perennial dilemma of the gap between knowledge and action. Illuminating why it is not enough to just know about the dire problems the world faces, she shows us how to solve those problems through more effective ways to contribute financially, more skillful ways to serve, and more enlightened ways to sustain inspiration and compassion. Change the World, Change Your Life is an eloquent treatise of new paradigm millennial service balancing virtual with hands-on skills, personal growth with worldly contribution, and pragmatism with passion. This inspiring young leader's rallying cry could not be more apropos for our urgent times, "Now it's your turn!" -Gail Straub, Co-Founder, The Empowerment Institute, author of The Rhythm of Compassion and Returning to My Mother's House

"Change the World, Change Your Life captures the spirit of service and leadership in the life of the everyday person. One voice can change the world, and this book shows you how." -Senator Bill Frist, M.D., Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader

"For a generation committed to public service, Angela Perkey has provided the role models and their road maps--and we are all left more hopeful about their future, and ours." -Bill Purcell, Director, Harvard Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and former Mayor of Nashville

"Angela Perkey is wise beyond her twenty something years! From her own personal experience in starting up a nonprofit, she has developed great insights that she shares with you in this book. Her helpful advice can empower you to be better able to focus your time and treasure to change the world for the better." -Ken Berger, President, Charity Navigator

"Inspiring, practical, motivating, Change the World, Change Your Life is a carefully researched easy read that packs a punch." -Ingrid Newkirk, President, PETA

"Serving others is essential to a happy and meaningful life. This book shows you how to do it." -James E. Ukrop, Chairman, First Market Bank

"We can all make a difference for the better in countless ways, large and small. As we help others, we will find greater meaning for our own lives. Angela Perkey describes these realities in compelling fashion. Her book is a clarion call for all of us to bestir ourselves for the larger good." -W. Taylor Reveley III, President of the College of William and Mary

"Community service is mostly understood as helping others. That is, of course, important. But Angela Perkey compellingly shows us that community service is also about helping ourselves. Making the world a better place makes us better people-happier and more fulfilled. That is a lesson from which we all can benefit." -Michael K. Powell, former Chair, Federal Communications Commission

Change Your World, Change Your Life: Discover Your Life Purpose Through Service tells how to be of service in the world and how to create a win-win situation, and is written for college students just out of school. It shows students how to uncover their desire to help with world issues by starting closer to home, and provides stories from people who have skills as well as no specific skills, often operating on a shoestring. An empowering read for any general lending library.

I was looking forward to this book and am disappointed that it is not a list of opportunities to explore. Chances are, if you're picking up this book you're already sold on the concept. Much of the book is devoted to selling you on the concept and to creating opportunities for yourself, doing your own fundraising, creating your own website for support, etc.. It just seems like a very difficult approach when there are already lots of service programs that one could tap into. I just wish I'd had a clearer idea of what the book was. It is definitely aimed at someone who is considering putting their life into service in a big way and wants a book to help them think about it. Not big on practicalities for everyone else.
