5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable and useful self-help manual, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
As a clinical psychologist, I am a strong believer in the impact of thinking on emotions, and thus many of my interventions with my own clients are cognitive in nature. The premise of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is that the way we think determines the way we feel, and this book Change Your Thinking, is a self-help manual designed to address stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional concerns through the use CBT. At the heart of CBT is the ability to recognize faulty thinking. The author describes the typical thinking errors which were originally identified by Aaron Beck in his ground-breaking book Cognitive Therapy of Depression; these include polarized (black-and-white) thinking, overgeneralizing, personalizing, filtering, jumping to (negative) conclusions, mind reading, blaming, labeling, predicting catastrophe, and comparing.

After Edelman has coached the reader in becoming adept at increasing awareness of negative thinking patterns, she moves on to the process of disputing negative and irrational beliefs; she then applies the disputation techniques to various types of concerns. Throughout the book, Edelman offers exercises to help readers apply the concepts which she has presented. Although Edelman borrows from the work of various giants in the field of psychology, she presents this information in a manner that is extremely accessible to the average reader and that is also appropriate to a self-help format. Given this, I highly recommend Change Your Thinking as a means for the general reader to apply the principles of CBT to their own lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars I never thought a book could make such a difference!, November 8, 2007
This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
Normally I don't think books like this are very helpful, but Change Your Thinking is really helping me to change my life. When I started reading it, I immediately felt like I could get back in control and actually improve what I had accepted as the status quo. The author gives a lot of simple tips that WORK, and the exercises are a big help. This is something that you need to commit to, but if you read this book and make even a tiny effort to pay attention to your thoughts you'll notice a difference.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone with depression or anxiety (I suffer from both).

5.0 out of 5 stars Ready for a 2nd copy, April 10, 2008

This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
I found this book in my local library after my psychologist recommended I look into CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). I brought it home, read the first 2-3 chapters, then went online & ordered my copy from Amazon with expedited shipping.I have since fired my psychologist (saving $120-$240 an hour). However, I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE. I was diagnosed with ADHD, depression, a few other little things, so I've been able to incorporate thought-monitoring into my consciousness & have had a lot of success with CBT in general. The explanations, examples, & thought-monitoring form are great. On the plus side, I am a stay-at-home mom, so I have the time to stop what I'm doing & do a little maintenance on myself when needed, something not everyone will be able to do. But if you get the book, take the time to read it & take the effort to apply the principles, apart from or in conjunction with a mental health provider, I believe you'll see definite results.Definitely a 5-star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change Your Thinking, March 4, 2009
This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
Edelman's book is one of the best self-help CBT books I have come across.

Edelman begins by providing an overview of the principles of CBT, namely the thoughts-feelings-behaviours link, and how anyone can apply this knowledge to common human problems. Edelman assigns a chapter to each "problem area" such as depression, anxiety and self-esteem, and provides a methodical and easy-to-understand description of activities one can do to combat the negative thinking that is often at the heart of these problems.

Edelman's book contains worksheets, diagrams, activities and quotes to help people understand CBT, apply it to everyday life and combat their problems. It is a great self-help book for those finding it difficult to cope with psychological issues and also a useful book for students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change Your Thinking:Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression and Improve your live with CBT, February 20, 2011

This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
This is probably the best book I have read on this subject in 15 years. It really does explain and help me to understand why I see things the way I do and how that effects the level of anxiety I experience, this information allows me to have a focus point and diffuse some of the more minor episodes. However, understanding and applying the changes are different. This book will tell you how, but actually making the changes on your own can be difficult and may require outside help, but the book is honest enough to tell you that as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and easy to read, September 19, 2010
This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
I read this book quite quickly. Edelman breaks it the content down into very simple terms. It provides some simple, easy-to-do strategies for battling depression, anxiety, anger, frustration etc, including changing negative thought patterns. Worked well enough for me, so my friend gave me Edelman's 'Releasing Anxiety' CD to use also. Worth a look!

This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
This is a very good, easy to read psychology book.

The book's chapters include:

- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Recognising Faulty Thinking
- Disputing Negative Cognitions
- Overcoming Frustration
- Managing Anger
- Coping with Anxiety
- Maintaining Self-Esteem
- Recovery From Depression
- Taking Charge
- Effective Communication
- Being Happy

This book includes some basic theories of cognitive behaviour therapy, and applies them with different emotions (see the chapter list). The author has done a great job by writing this book so that it is easy to understand and not too difficult for anyone who has not read psychology before and who does not know the concepts so well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understanding a person with GAD, December 18, 2010

This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
My new friend suffers from this disorder. Before I read the book, I could not comprehend why all my attempts to help my friend were met with rejection even though she seemed comfortable with our new-found friendship. I have concluded that her need for excessive control is a characteristic that blocks all my attempts to help her. Without the help of this book, I would have probably concluded she was a nutcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, July 27, 2010

This review is from: Change Your Thinking: Overcome Stress, Anxiety, and Depression, and Improve Your Life with CBT (Paperback)
Love it, for my job and also studying youthwork and counseling aka community service course. I know full well that this actually works, I believe a lot of the medication that has been given out is not needed but needs CBT. I have seen for myself back in the old days how I was treated in the psch ward. The anti-depressants was not working not the psychotic medication. It just got me worse, infact I chose to leave and did it all on my own and found a clinic that looked quite nice and professional. I chose to go in and what do you know, here I am being treated by the doctors counseling (minor) and also referred to a CBT counselor. And I'm normal again.

This book is a must! if you are going through depression/anxiety. I won't bother to tell you what it's about but I can tell you that once you read it you will know how your brain works and there will be techniques in there that you do to help you faster in the right track
