3.0 out of 5 stars Time travel, fairies &a cute dog what more could you want?
This is the first book I've read by Lisa Cach and it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the hero was more like an average man. He wasn't extremely tall or very muscular. The heroine was a modern woman who deals quite well with the fact that she has been flung back in time to a period where women were under strct constraints and I'm not...

This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
"The Changeling Bride" is the story of Elle, a young woman somewhat disenchanted with life at the end of the 20th Century in America. She makes a wish that is surprisingly granted, sending her back in time and across the Atlantic to find what was missing in her life.

Lisa Cach describes Elle's adventures and struggles with delightful humor and creativity. Elle is a modern woman, willing to change somewhat to fit into her new life in the 1790s, but who will not compromise when it comes to speaking up her mind. The environment will have to adapt to her also! And so we join the heroine as she ever so imaginatively introduces modern concepts such as pizza and birth control to 18th Century England.

"The Changeling Bride" is highly entertaining and a most enjoyable read. Elle's adventures traveling across time have transported me along in a journey of my own, out of the very limiting reality we all live in into a world of endless possibility, where anything can happen. What a joy! It was as if I also traveled in time, back to my younger years when believing in magic, fairies and wishes come true was simply the way life worked itself out. How refreshing!

5.0 out of 5 stars A TOUCH OF MAGIC MAKES ROMANTIC FANTASIES POSSIBLE, November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
"The Changeling Bride" takes a modern woman and puts her in the midst of a century long past. This is a delightful concept for me, as a regular romance novel reader. After all, what are we doing when we read stories of this genre if not quietly longing for a different type of world, and putting ourselves in the place of the heroine? This book uses a traditional romance format and twists it - using a bit of magic - so that the fantasy becomes a bit more plausible.

Ms. Cach also addresses several things in the plot that are conspicuously absent from other historical romance novels I have read, yet have always wondered about in the back of my mind. Namely, the issue of birth control, type of food available, and those embarrassing but necessary bodily functions. She attacks each subject with a touch of humor as well as practicality that makes for an interesting and entertaining tale.

The best thing about the book, however, is the heroine herself. Because she is from our day and age, one can relate to her with ease. She is not a tiny-waisted and naive virgin, but a robust, healthy and somewhat cynical woman of modern America. We all dream about another day and age, but what would we do if we were truly given the `opportunity' to experience it? "The Changeling Bride" offers us a glimpse into what the realities of the 1700's were, while maintaining the romantic aura necessary for a truly good read.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to other titles by Ms. Cach.

3.0 out of 5 stars Time travel, fairies &a cute dog what more could you want?, April 11, 2002
This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
This is the first book I've read by Lisa Cach and it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the hero was more like an average man. He wasn't extremely tall or very muscular. The heroine was a modern woman who deals quite well with the fact that she has been flung back in time to a period where women were under strct constraints and I'm not just talking about the clothes.

The story starts off with Wihelmina, or Elle as she likes to be called, given a note by a homeless person in modern times. She doesn't even look at the paper until she is out with her dog on a walk. The note reads "Coupon Good for: one free husband. Redeem at will". She looks up into the sky and waves the coupon states the she wants to redeem her coupon. She thinks its just a joke when all of the sudden she is surrounded by fairies and they transport her back in time to be the wife of Henry. Henry's bride to be Eleanor is who she is replacing. Henry has no idea anything is different because they apparently look the same. She decides to go along with it so that she can at least get the wedding. I mean every girl dreams of a big wedding with all the trimmings. Then she will go back to her time. Only that doesn't happen. She seems stuck in 1790 with a husband who she doesn't know but is very attracted to. Henry doesn't quite know what to make of his bride. She doesn't seem like the person he met before but he likes this person better. He is puzzled by her lack of knowledge about running a household and her ideas about birth control but can't help but fall for her. Elle fights her feelings for Henry and when she finally lets him into her heart she thinks that she must leave him and go back to her time.

This tale is wonderfully written and it made for a very enjoyable read. I look forward to other books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read!, March 1, 2000

This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
This story of a modern woman from the Northwest struggling to make sense of life and love in Georgian England is witty and entertaining from start to finish. The heroine's predicament (thanks to some misguided but well-intentioned fairies) results in a temporal culture clash with very amusing results. The author thoroughly explores many of the challenges a modern woman would face when placed in such a situation. One of the great strengths of the book is the heroine Elle, who must somehow try to fit her independent, modern worldview into the realities of a more tradition-bound society while staying faithful to her true self. I found her a wonderful character that I could easily relate to. While Ms. Cach plays lightly with some of the "historical romance" conventions, the romance that develops between the two main characters is both genuine and passionate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern woman finds humorous pitfalls & romance in the past., November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
This book has all of the formula requirements of a time travel romance. What I found refreshing was the heroine's view of the daily life a woman of the English privileged class 200 years ago. ie: A Nineties-kind-of-gal desparately trying to remember the history she hadn't paid too much attention to in school, but is now living in. Getting carsick in a coach rocking and rolling on unpaved roads. Having to use a chamber pot instead of a having a flush toilet and hot running water. Yes, a fairy promise helps her meet Mr. Wonderful, and her life back in the Nineties was ho-hum. But is love and the challenge of the English lifestyle enough for love to conquer all? All of this is done with the light touch of humor which the author uses to have her heroine relay her situation to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish upon a star, indeed, April 28, 2000
By
This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
Wilhelmina March (Elle) wants some excitement in her life and BOY! does she get it. A magic coupon leads to a wish for a husband, except that this husband, Henry Trevelyan, is way back in 1790. But no matter, because Elle is magically switched with Henry's odious fiancee, Eleanor, and the marriage takes place. There is that rarity of rarities, real communication between hero and heroine, it deals with ALL sorts of questions a modern woman would have if she woke up in another time, and all in all, this is a very enjoyable book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Woman meets Georgian Gentleman, February 19, 2000
This review is from: The Changeling Bride (Paperback)
When Elle wished for a husband who didn't expect anything of her, she never expected her wish to come true. Immediately after her wish the modern woman is transported back to Georgian England.

When Henry decided to barter his title for a rich wife, he expected a woman who could run his household and give him heirs. He never expected his countess to be quiet like Elle.

Elle knew nothing of eighteenth century living, how to run a house, food, etc. Most of all Elle was afraid to have children.

Dumbfounded by his bride, Henry slowly but surely wins her over. But how did she get here and why?

Lisa Cach has written a nice time travel which gives the reader some interesting insights to eighteenth century living. I look forward to reading more from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow Loved It, October 28, 2011
On a normal basis I don't ever and I mean ever read a time travel book but for some reason the description of this book hooked me and I am ever soooo glad. The author is mega talented and I will investigate all her others.

Let me point out that I did read most of the reviews especially the 3 star ones and want to point out that this is a historical romance FICTION novel and that means "it ain't real" so if it is fairies that get you there or ghosts, goblins etc.... so what it doesn't do us a bit of harm believing just for that short space of time it takes to read a book. Apparently some individuals believed this detracted from the book I personally loved every bit of it. I laughed, cried and ended on a good note. I would have paid big bucks to read it and was ever so lucky to have gotten it for free. I even loved the title. Happy Reading Enjoy
