I have enjoyed reading this book with my 9 year old. I thought since the description said 9-12, that I should read to my 9 year old. It is a great series, but I do think he could read and understand it just fine without me. Struggling learners or kids new to chapter books may find it hard to follow. But if your child is a good reader, and loves to read on his/her own, I highly recommend this series.

This book is marketed as a childrens book so I purchased it for my 10 year old son. Really...it should be marked T for teen. This is not a young child's series. With use of such descriptive phrases as the following:
"The guardian cringed as he saw houses strewn about the hillside, people clinging to trees, children stripped bare, shoes and clothes and kitchen utensils, and farm equipment hanging eerily in the treetops."
The book is excellent in terms of training for spiritual warfare.

Great series of books, teaches children about courage, faith, hope and trust. I read it to my kids, and I enjoy the story myself.
