Deeply inspired by her mother, Oveida, who was then lead singer in the gospel group The Apostolic Singers, Carmen joined her church's junior choir. A passion for music was instilled for life, and it was with ... Read more in Amazon's Carmen Lundy Store

This is a c.d. for brandy, cigars and cuddling.
Rick Cornell
Aside from being a great vocalist, Carmen is just as talented as a composer and she wrote every song on this album except for "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square."

There is so much that can be said about Carmen Lundy's new Cd "Changes". It is without a doubt a masterpiece of music, like stepping into a magical musical wonderland. There is not one song on this Cd that is not my favorite. I have played it over and over and actually had been blessed with having an advance copy so I am in complete awe of Carmen and her band of musicians and believe me when I tell you that is an understatement! As far as I am concerned I don't need any other music and there is none that can compare to this incredible work of music genius from a Master composer, lyricist and vocalist. FINALLY, America's best kept music secret is out and her name is Carmen Lundy!!!

After hearing Ms. Lundy's last recording, "Solamente," I'm intrigued by the title of this c.d. She explains in the liner notes that the reason for the title is that this is the first time she has used the guitar, rather than the piano, as the primary harmonic instrument in writing her songs. I'll take her word for it; though that is obvious on the set-ender and highlight, a duet with guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, "Where Love Surrounds Us," it's a pretty subtle distinction otherwise.

I see "Changes" as an appropriate title, however, for a different reason:

"Solamente" was a one-woman band production, with Ms. Lundy writing, arranging, singing, and playing all of the instruments. In my 4-star review of that album, I noted my concern that the end result veered dangerously toward smooth jazz. No such observation here. Here, Ms. Lundy sticks to writing, arranging and singing, and leaves the instrumental sound in the more-than-capable hands of Anthony Wonsley (p.), Kenny Davis (b.), Jamison Ross (d. and per.), Nolan Shaheed (trp) and George Bohannon (trm), as well as Mr. Castro-Neves. The sound is contemporary jazz, with the edginess necessary to make it interesting. I give kudos to producer, Elizabeth Oei, for that.

And Ms. Lundy herself sounds wonderful. Her voice throughout is warm, inviting, intimate. This is a c.d. for brandy, cigars and cuddling. The songs are positive for the most part, and leave an aura of hope, wonderment, and possibilities.

My understanding is that this album has made the first cut for Grammy possibilities. That is as it should be. I'd like to see Ms. Lundy be nominated for this. RC
