4.5 Stars... Over the Rhine's first 'proper' live album, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Changes Come: Over the Rhine LIVE (Audio CD)
Over the Rhine has self-released a lot of albums over the years, but really kicked it into gear starting with 2002's "The Cutting Floor". After the 2003 release of the epic double CD "Ohio" album (considered by many as the crowning moment of the band), the band went on tour and this self-released CD the following year is the result of that.
"Changes Come" (13 tracks; 74 min.) is not the first live album from the band (1999's "Amateur Shortwave Radio" is a collection of assorted live tracks from the first 10 years of the band) but it is the first "proper" live album, documenting the "Ohio" tour. What a fabulous album it is. Nine of the tracks on here are from the Ohio album, but none stands out more than the "Lifelong Fling" track, which now appears as a 10 min. medley with a cover of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" (hence the "Lifelong Sunshine" title), just superb. Karin's solo take on piano of the "Ohio" title track still sends shivers down my spine. "The World Can Wait" and "When I Go" (both from "Films for Radio") are equally outstanding. The band in 2006 started an equally enticing "Live from Nowhere" live CD series, and just recently brought us "Volume 3" in that series. Please note that all of these releases are available from the band's website. Meanwhile "Changes Come" is highly recommended, and if you are not familiar with the band, a great entry point.

This is an astonishing, powerful live album from Over the Rhine, full of soaring guitars, organ, piano, pedal steel, and Karin Bergquist's incredible voice. Recorded one evening in the fall of 2003, the lineup includes: Spinning. Show Me. She. Nobody #1. Suitcase. Lifelong Sunshine. Ohio. All I Need Is Everything. The World Can Wait. When I Go. B.P.D. Cruel & Pretty. Changes Come. A uniforming great outing, with standout performances on Nobody #1 and Changes Come.
