Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7?Two books that offer basic explanations of puberty while broadly addressing vital contemporary concerns such as molestation, sexual harassment, and AIDS. Generously illustrated with cheerful, multicultural black-and-white cartoons, each title defines many of the terms and topics middle schoolers wonder about, such as the mechanics of intercourse and menstruation. The texts examine the general physical and emotional changes of adolescence, but stop short of detailed discussions of birth control, STDs, and sexual relationships. There are chapters in each volume on the importance of good decision-making that offer a couple of exercises ideal for classroom discussion and suggest questions for evaluating healthy romantic relationships. Each title includes three sets of transparent color overlays to illustrate growth, reproductive organs, and conception, which are attractive but of limited informational value. The glossaries include some slang and also define a few terms beyond those used in the text. Robie Harris's It's Perfectly Normal (Candlewick, 1994) is a better, more appealing choice, but it's also more explicit.?Virginia E. Jeschelnig, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, factual resource for girls age 7 - 11, July 4, 1997

This review is from: Changes in You and Me: A Book About Puberty, Mostly for Girls (Spiral-bound)
Information about natural changes which will occur in a girl's body are presented in a very accessible way. There is a good amount of information which can lead to discussion. It is absorbing reading for any young girl curious about the changes she is about to go through or just starting to go through. A thoughtful touch is the information about what is appropriate touching or talking from adults to girls, and advice about medical examinations. There is also some reference to dealing with feelings or concerns about being gay or bisexual which is handled positively. As a parent of two girls, I highly recommend it

This review is from: Changes in You and Me: A Book About Puberty, Mostly for Girls (Spiral-bound)
This is not a book that I would want my children to read because it discusses several sexual issues without stating that there is right and wrong sexual behavior. Regarding "making love" they say that "When two people are ready and want to be as close as possible to each other, thay may have sexual intercourse." Regarding masturbation, they say "It's okay if you do and okay if you don't." Regarding homosexuality they say, "It is not something a person chooses. Rather, its something that happens."
