5.0 out of 5 stars A good jumping off point for future Bowie fans.
When I first bought this album, it was available in almost every store I went into. Nowadays, it has to be specially ordered. I don't get that, but I can tell you, it is worth the extra effort. This was the first Bowie album I bought. I wanted to get my feet wet and see if I would like any other songs besides "Ziggy Stardust." Well, I wasn't disappointed...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Bowie Compilation; 3 1/2 Stars
Let me start off by saying I love David Bowie. He's one of the most diverse artists in the music industry and for the most part his work falls nothing short of amazing. "Changesbowie", a 18 track, single disc greatest hits collection, was the cd that introduced me to his genius, so obviously it holds some sentimental value. However, not too long ago, a two disc...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good jumping off point for future Bowie fans., January 3, 2000

When I first bought this album, it was available in almost every store I went into. Nowadays, it has to be specially ordered. I don't get that, but I can tell you, it is worth the extra effort. This was the first Bowie album I bought. I wanted to get my feet wet and see if I would like any other songs besides "Ziggy Stardust." Well, I wasn't disappointed. This album offers a great overview of some of Bowie's greatest hits (and personas), from the looming "Space Oddity" all the way up to his 80's albums with "Modern Love" and "Blue Jean." My favorite song is "Heroes," although I was disappointed to learn that this song was an edited version. I am guessing that perhaps some of the other songs were edited as well. Still though, if you are a would-be Bowie fan who isn't sure about which albums to buy, this is a good way to get started on a collection from one of the greatest musical artists of the 20th (and 21st)century.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile but incomplete collection, March 15, 2005
This review is from: Changesbowie (Audio CD)
Changes is an intelligent selection of Bowie's best up to the middle 1980s. All of this music has aged well, from 1969's Space Oddity, through the glam rock (Jean Genie/Rebel Rebel) and plastic soul (Young Americans/Fame) periods to his return to rock (Ashes To Ashes) and exploration of sleek dance-pop (Let's Dance).

China Girl and Modern Love, although huge hits, don't represent the best in his work and I would have preferred Wild Is The Wind or Word On A Wing from the Station To Station album, which is represented by Golden Years. But in this sort of compilation, commercial success and chart position weigh the heaviest.

The compilation is an impressive showcase of Bowie's versatility and mastery of styles. Genie, Diamond Dogs and Rebel Rebel are blistering slices of rock, Young Americans, Fame and Fashion lean towards dance/funk, whilst Golden Years and Ashes to Ashes are soulful pop. Heroes dates from his synth period with Brian Eno, which is not well represented.

This album is by no means complete as many larger and smaller hits are omitted, like the novelty song The Laughing Gnome (1973), Under Pressure (with Queen), Dancing In The Street (with Mick Jagger), Sorrow from the Pin Ups album and Sound And Vision from the Low album. But Changes is still a worthwhile retrospective of Bowie's career.

5.0 out of 5 stars This ain't rock and roll! This is genocide!, January 22, 2006

This is a fine compilation of 75 minutes worth of some of David Bowie's most popular songs. Is it perfect? No, but how could it be, when everyone has different favorite songs? Notable American hits that are missing are: "Under Pressure" with Queen, "This is Not America" with the Pat Metheny Group, "Dancing in the Street" with Mick Jagger, "Day-In Day-Out" and "Never Let Me Down". There are too many missing British hits to mention. Probably the most questionable decision was to include a 1990 remix of "Fame", instead of the original version. Still, it's an excellent sampler of Bowie's work.

everything on here is absolutely essential, necessary for people to listen to! David Bowie is pretty much incomparable, but if I had to compare him to someone I would compare him to the Rolling Stones, but with more musicality and much better tunes. more of a glam rock version of the Stones, I think. Whatever these tunes are, they are really good. pick this one up as soon as possible. This is probably my current most favorite cd, but I wish it had "the man who sold the world" on it. Oh well, just pick up this, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, The Man who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, and Low for a complete Bowie collection. Or just get this as a terrific single disc retrospective of the best part of his career!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suitable for the casual Bowie fan, December 16, 2005
This review is from: Changesbowie (Audio CD)
I can remember back in the early 80's catching an HBO special featuring Bowie and I was blown away about the theatricality and over-the-top sexual ambiguity of the singer so much that the lyrics escaped me. Thus, I wasn't abreast of Bowie the enigmatic lyricist. I bought the album solely for later hits, "Young Americans," "Diamond Dogs," "Golden Years," "Fashion," "Fame," the mega-selling "Let's Dance" and "Modern Love." Although I was familiar with the other song titles, this compilation offered me an opportunity to catch up with many of the songs that his true fans relish.

Bowie is a true Renaissance man, scoring points for his composing and delivery, as well as his acting in a scant few(unfortunately) films.

If one is limited to a single Bowie album, then "ChangesBowie" is the one to buy.

However, not too long ago, a two disc compilation entitled "Best Of Bowie" was released. Obviously, it includes more songs than "Changesbowie". But does "Changesbowie" still hold up? Read on for the positives and the negatives.

Positives:
-You get most of Bowie's best work, including classics like "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Fame", "Heroes" and "China Girl".
-"John, I'm Only Dancing" is on here. It's the only Bowie compilation available that I know of that carries this song.
-It's pretty cheap.
-It includes a rare 1990 remix of "Fame".

Negatives:
-It leaves out too many hits. How can you have a Bowie hits collecetion without "The Man Who Sold The World", "Life On Mars", "Moonage Daydreams", "TVC 15", "Sound And Vision", "Scary Monsters", "Under Pressure", (with Queen) "Cat People (Putting Put Fire"), "Without You", "Tonight", "Absolute Beginners", "Day-In Day-Out", "Never Let Me Down", "Dancing In The Street" (with Mick Jagger) and "This Is Not America (with the Pat Metheny Group)? (yes I realize this list is out of chronological order).
-This collection goes up to roughly 1990. That means you're missing out on great later material such as "The Heart's Filthy Lesson", "I'm Afraid Of Americans", "Thursday's Child" and "Slow Burn".
-It is almost impossible to locate. It's only available on special order here at Amazon.
-The two disc "Best Of Bowie, as I said earlier, puts this to shame.

Bottom line: get "Best Of Bowie".

4.0 out of 5 stars Bowie strikes again!, January 23, 2004
This review is from: Changesbowie (Audio CD)
Bowie strikes again, with this album of 18 perfect songs! Start off your day with 'Changes'. While you're waiting for a pie to cook, wait with 'Jean Genie'. Before you go to sleep, listen to 'Space Oddity' so you can sleep wondering about the song.

Bowie has done it again!
