Editorial Reviews

Michael Paoletta, Billboard Magazine January 20, 2001

If ever a song deserved to sit atop Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, "Changin’" is it!

Product Description

Clifford Covers Classy Classic

A dream realized, “Changin’” is nothing short of a labor of love for West End Records’ proud papa, Mel Cheren. The original version, a "sleaze" classic by Sharon Ridley (Tabu Records,1976) has been a personal favorite of his since it was released. After he introduced the song to DJ Larry Levan (who remembered dancing to it at The Flamingo), it became one of Larry’s favorite closing theme songs at the Paradise Garage–a song he'd often play especially for Mel; as would other DJs around town when they wanted to "tip their hats" to him if he was in the club.

The idea to have Linda Clifford cover "Changin'" originally struck Mel a couple years ago when he was thinking about re-opening West End Records. Delayed by the business of getting West End back in the game, it was over a year before he sent Linda a tape of the Sharon Ridley version. She loved it, played it for Ralphi Rosario (with whom she'd been working on a regular basis) and he loved it too. Mel suggested the two go ahead and record it together. They did, with Linda penning a few additional saucy lyrics, and here it is! (That’s her Fierceness above, looking very pleased about the whole thing.)

Ralphi’s versions were released and DJ/remixers who loved the record came a-knockin’ asking permission to present their take on “Changin’.” Although the remixes have been released on two separate vinyl packages (Tom Moulton/Blaze/ Southern Divide and Pound Boys/Julian Marsh), all vocal mixes are here on the maxi-CD

5.0 out of 5 stars ". . .don't change, baby !", December 11, 2001

It is a little sad that the best vocal house track of 2001 is -- one -- a remake of a 1976 disco song, and -- two - is turned-out by a R&B/Disco veteran. But contemporary dance music's loss is our gain. The ever-fierce Miss Linda Clifford has got the voice of life, and it's certainly not her fault that the new girls can't keep pace. And "Changin'" is a slice of heaven. Linda delivers this bittersweet lyric with her trademark verve and sass. And she dishes enough attitude to make you wanna slap somebody. She can coo sweet nothings or cuss you out with equal conviction, and she is capable of delivering a vocal of wall-rattling intensity.

Not surprisingly, the best mix is by Tom Moulton, the mix starts slow and builds to a throbbing climax and wrings every last drop of drama out of Clifford's splendid vocal. Ralphi Rosario's original mix is classic garage. Blaze's Shelter Mix and the Pound Boy's mix are a little more downtempo but both complement the vocal well. The Southern Divide "Latin Flava" mix is nice but could use a little more spice. The Julian Marsh mix is standard circuit party monotony and is the weakest of the bunch. But we're talking about an exceptionally strong package overall.

Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bomb, September 9, 2005
This review is from: Changin' (Audio CD)
A single with no less than 8 different mixes, with around a total playing time of over ONE HOUR of music has to be a bargain! Ranging from gospel influenced house (Tom Moulton) to uplifting deep house (Ralphi's Vox Dub), to trance (Julian Marsh Power Drive Mix), this is a great and varied track. After some 30 years in the business, Linda can still deliver. If you are a fan of Linda Clifford, or simply want to add a new house track to your collection, buy this single now. You won't be sorry. Show 'em how it's done, Linda.

in stead of the review above, i would say the Blaze remix is the killer track!!. The moulton mix sounds very outdated while the blaze mix gives the track extra power yet still soulful as hell!!
