I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. This is a very good book to help both lay people and clergy begin understanding the current situation of our religious culture (N. America)and to begin exploring new ways to "do church" together for mainline Protestant congregations. This is mostly about changing the dynamics of current congregations and helping discover why "we're here" and what we should be doing about that.

I thought this book was excellent and we are planning to use it for an adult education class. There is a lot of information that I'm sure will help us in the way that we look at ourselves and how we fit into the world.

Although there may be some valuable ideas for revitalizing congregations hidden amongst the pages, the writing is dense and lacks vitality. This is not a terribly helpful book for lay members.
