Book Description

February 2000
Management paradigms, the system of ideas by which managers understand and act upon in the economic world, have undergone a rapid process of transformation in recent years. Throughout the business world management thinking is becoming more sophisticated. A cerebral approach to rethinking companies is apparent, and a familiarity with a variety of management theories is often required by practising managers in response to the rapid evolution of the business environment. This work seeks to explain how current developments in management ideas relate to traditional forms of management thought and practice, and examines which paradigms are likely to be durable in the next century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Changing Paradigms, June 29, 2000
This book achieves what it sets out to achieve in the preface - to "synthesise the central shifts of management thought and practice in the late twentieth century and into the next millennium". The authors provide a convincing argument about the need to reconsider management thinking and practice. The topics discussed in each chapter are timely and relevant. These include globalization, digitalization and sustainability.

In the final chapter, the authors state that an organization's ultimate goals should be based on sustainability and ecological approaches rather than profit and growth. For some managers this will be a radical shift.

The book gets four stars rather than five as it is not the first book of its kind and there will be managers who have heard much of this information before. However, even for these managers the book provides a useful summary of the latest management thinking.
