I'm no IT pro but my experience was just the opposite from previous review: Long story short, I accidentally formatted a hard drive & lost everything. "Recover My Files" got back about 99% of what I lost. I tried it again on a digital camera flash card after I had intentionally erased it (files had been safely copied to my PC first). I was totally surprised at how many files were recovered from the "blank" flash card. I found it works better if you specify only a few file types per recovery such as .jpg, .doc, .xls, etc.

I think this is an excellent product. My laptop hard drive crashed. I put it in a USB enclosure and bought RMF after reading reviews. It has a high rating, and I think it deserves it. I was able to recover most of my files off a drive with thousands of disk read errors.

A prior amazon review indicated that they got an old version from amazon.com and to pay more and get the most recent version. I was able to download the free upgrade to the latest version.

Because my hard drive had was bad, producing thousands of disk read errors, the recovery took a long time. It seams that each disk error has several seconds of retry. But stopping the scan after a sufficient amount of time, did cause the program to proceed. It would be nice if the delay (retry reads?) that occurs with each disk read error, could be reduced. I suspect that this is at a low level and may not be within RMFs control.

I was quite impressed that I was able to recover files off of this bad drive.

I would have given this product a 5 star, however, the version that came from Amazon is an older version and when I ran it, it took 4 days instead of the 8 hours that it took me to run the latest version downloaded from the GetData website. I ended up returning it and downloaded the latest and it took me less because when I try to save, it took forever to do anything since it ate up all of my virtual memory from the machine.
To be fair, the latest version recovered all the files that I lost (I reformatted my HD accidently through recovering from a crash). I would still recommend it but I would get the latest even if you had to pay a little more.

I mistakenly did a system restore and lost all my files. I downloaded this program and I have to say, I got back around 60-75% of my files - which is better than nothing. I think the IT guy review refers to the fact that the program picks up A LOT of crap! While reviewing JPEGs there was a lot of Microsoft stuff that was "saved", lots of small icons/pictures that were from the web or software I installed...letters from different fonts and all sorts of useless information that I had no idea where it had come from.

I had a lot of video files that I haven't viewed in years and that I thought I deleted off my computer that turned up (for those looking for lost video). I was really looking for my MP3s. I think it found most of the songs that I had recently done something with - burned to a CD or put on my MP3 player.

Overall, I can't say this product was a waste. I did get some of my stuff back and I felt better knowing I had done all I could to get my stuff back. I noticed some people's computers crashed so maybe that was why they got everything back.

My new laptop crashed, taking with it all of my family photo files. I was heartbroken. I called a few companies that offer data recovery services and got prices ranging from $500 to $2,000, without a guarantee of retrieving any files! I bought this program and got back about 95% of my missing files.
It's an amazing program.

I accidentally wiped my external hard drive clean erasing home videos that were priceless to me and my family. In a panic I called companies to see what they would charge to recover the items and I was told $500 to $1500 but I wouldn't get a firm price until the hard-drive was delivered to them. So I asked around and searched for other options and purchased this product. Thank god I did. I recovered everything I lost, which is the important part! The only gripe I have is it took over 48 hours to recover my items and I had to save over 5000 items individually, but I got the items back and it only costs me about $50. Try it before you spend a ridiculous amount of money on a recovery company.

I recently (4/7/07) had a major hard drive situation. I accidentally quick formatted the WRONG Hard drive, and erased 6 years of photos and data. All gone. I was sunk. The professional data recovery centers quoted over $1000 to recover all my data. So I looked for software. I tried several different programs, some rated even higher than "Recover My Files" in software ratings. None of them retrieved all my data, and none of them recovered my file structure.

"Recover My Files" did it all. It took a long time to run on my 160GB hard drive (20 hrs), but it recovered EVERYTHING. Compared with the $1000 fee it was over a 90% discount to get the same results. Have you ever been in a store, spotted something that you need at a 90% discount, and NOT bought it? Exactly. This software is worth the price, and if you are not sure you can set it loose on your hard drive for free. Only pay if it finds what you are looking for.

I have used this program on four occasions and have been able to recover all the files on a formatted disk on two occasions, all the files on a USB memory stick and recover about 90% of the files I tried to recover from a completely crashed HD.

Like the other reviewers who were able to use this I think it is an amazing program. I have no idea why the one person never got it to work, but if you have a problem and you are unsure about if it's worth the investment you can download a trial version and see if it is able to find your files. You can open the files to see if they are readable and pay for the full version later to recover everything it finds.

I've only used one other file recovery program before and this one blows it out of the water!! I scanned a 160gig hard drive for every file type searchable and it took 6 days to scan. I should've narrowed it down to only the file types I was searching for. I performed another search for 3 file types and it only took 2 hours. It recovered my videos, pictures, and songs along with every other file imaginable!!!! Well worth the money!!! If your hard drive crashed because of a physical defect (making grinding noise), I wouldn't try it....send it in and pay the money if need-be. But if it crashed because the drive became unrecognizable, corrupted, or accidentally reformatted or deleted use this product before paying hundreds of dollars!!!

While deployed to Afghanistan, my 1TB hard drive was corrupted and I lost all my movies, TV shows and documents. I ordered this and had it sent to Afghanistan. It arrived quickly and I was able to recover all of my files. My computer was not even able to recognize the hard drive so I had to format it, and Get Data was still able to recover it. Excellent product and gret service!
