I purchased the Channellock 415 smooth jaw T&G Plier. I have notice that their quality is less than it has been in the past. The plier is coated with a type of laquer film and that makes a smooth action problematic. Also, there is a burr on the smooth jaws that I will have to remove with a file, so it will not scratch the plumbing fixtures.

The product is usable, but quality control needs to be increased.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Cannot Recommend, January 6, 2012

This review is from: Channellock 415 10-Inch Tongue and Groove Plier (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm a licensed professional plumber that has around 12 different Channellock pliers used daily. The standard with teeth. They are the best I've used vs. all other brands. That is why I have so many different sizes. The right size jaw, angle, movement in the mechanism, hinge. In short, they are the ones to have for this type work.

I didn't, however, have a pair of smooth jawed (no teeth) ones for finish work and thought they would be handy vs. adjustable wrenches and the Ridgid type smooth jaw pipe wrench that is much heavier. With all my other Channellocks always being great, I knew this was the way to go without even holding them first. Mistake.

That's why it is disappointing to only give this tool one star. The great thing about quick-adjusting-tongue-groove pliers is that once you get the right size/groove you can pretty much "one hand" tightening or loosening your fastener. You can rock the wrench back open with your pinky finger. It's one of, if not, THE reason to buy them.

Not these.

The machining is just plain off for some reason. The lacquer for temporary rust protection is not the problem in my opinion. Other Channellocks that I have came with it and never had any issues. They want to catch hard in the widest groove. And yes, the widest groove is supposed to be used and operate smoothly. They also catch in other gooves, but not as tightly. Just tight enough to not be able to "one hand" it.

Thought I got a bad pair and sent them back for replacement. I didn't want a refund. This is not some impulse buy. I'll actually be using them more than most.

Amazon is great on returns and make it very smooth in my opinion. (First one I've ever had to do.) Sent me another pair.....

SAME PROBLEMS!!!!

So based on two different pair of the exact same product along with another person's review here, I think I can say with some degree of confidence to never buy these without actually holding them and working through the grooves to see if they operate correctly.

I also emailed Channellock customer service when I had the first pair just to let them know in case they had to tweak something on the production line. I never heard a word back. Not even a form email. Disappointing all the way around.

Quick summary: Other Channellock products=Good. These=Suck. Never buy them.
