Book Description

January 1, 2006

In his colorful stenciled images, Chant Avedissian deftly explores the boundaries between “high” and “low” art, politics and pop, the ephemeral and the enduring, and Egypt and the world. Avedissian refined his techniques in Western art schools, but he draws inspiration from Egypt's modern Golden Age, with its glamorous divas and mustachioed movie stars.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'What is most noticeable in this beautiful book is the deep love that Chant seems to have for his country ... through his modern icons Chant shows an individual art that is incomparable to any other work.' Al-Arab

Book Description

The iconic figures in artist Chant Avedissian’s canvases include legendary singers Om Kulthoum and Asmahan; screen sirens Shadia and Hind Rostom; heart-throbs Farid al-Atrash and Abdel Halim Hafez; and once-adored statesmen like Gamal Abdel Nasser. These works explore the boundaries between "high" and "low" art; politics and pop; the ephemeral and the enduring; and Egypt and the rest of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous work in a beautiful book, June 13, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chant Avedissian: Cairo Stencils (Paperback)
This is a terrific and thorough examination of the work of Chant Avedissian, an Egyptian-Armenian artist. First, the book is gorgeous, all colour plates printed beautifully with a great introduction that tells about the artist and also about the social and political framework of Egypt and how the work fits into that. The plates are divided into categories by subject matter. Second, the work is really beautiful and demonstrates the influence on the artist of his travels (to the far east, and west) in the lush patterns and references, and the mediums, (often monotypes on cardboard). It captures this body of Avedissian's work wonderfully. The Cairo Stencils series uses pattern, portraiture and text to capture the richness and complexity of Egypt. Avedissians work is a historical (yet contemporary) visual tour of the Egyptian psyche.
