5.0 out of 5 stars A Standard Bearer for the Genre! Calm, Peaceful, Beautiful!
I have to admit that when I got this disc, it was more out of curiousity as it had done very well commercially and although I had read about Gregorian Chants, I had no idea what they were and thought that this would be a good way to find out.

3.0 out of 5 stars good, but there are better choices
While this is a good collection & the most well-known, there are actually much better choices. For example, there is
Lost in Meditation: Meditative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 1
by Cappella Gregorianna
which is a far fresher recording with far more ambience & natural reverberation. Plus, it is about half the price as this one, which was originally recorded in...

I have to admit that when I got this disc, it was more out of curiousity as it had done very well commercially and although I had read about Gregorian Chants, I had no idea what they were and thought that this would be a good way to find out.

Well, the sound quality of the recording was quite decently done and what struck me was the calm, serene vibes I was getting from listening to the tracks. And then it struck me that there were no musical accompanyments and it was just these guys with their voices!

So simple and yet so beautiful were the sounds coming out of the disc. A great stress reliever and to think that this kind of music has been around for millenia! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chant, August 13, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chant (Audio CD)
I purchased this item because one of my children has been going through the Tomatis method of auditory integration training to correct some auditory processing issues that affect his ability to communicate. The Gregorian Chant was recommended as a follow up because of its many and pure sound frequencies. After listening to different samples of the Chant, I picked the one sung by the Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos for its sound clarity. Also, it has been interesting to see the reaction of all my children. Two of them weep when they listen to the chant and the other one seems be soothed by it. As an adult, it is this soothing effect from the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos that I find most fascinating.

While this is a good collection & the most well-known, there are actually much better choices. For example, there is
Lost in Meditation: Meditative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 1
by Cappella Gregorianna
which is a far fresher recording with far more ambience & natural reverberation. Plus, it is about half the price as this one, which was originally recorded in the 60s & then remastered. I find this one a tad dry (& also without as much variety) compared to the "Lost in Meditation" collection. Another very good one is Mysteria by Chanticleer which has a lot of variety & excellent sound recording. (though I would still rank it lower than the Capella Gregorianna one, because some selections also sound less full, as if they were recoded in studio & not a large cathedral)

5.0 out of 5 stars Cloistered Calm, July 24, 2000

That the calm and the serenity conveyed by these chants, which have survived for approximately 1,500 years, is still relevant today, can be readily appreciated by the fact this recording stayed at the top of the best seller list an inordinately long period of time upon its release.

In addition, if one has a sense of history, listening to this music is like peering through a window into the distance past. The intervening hundreds of years seem to melt away.

My tastes in music are rock. Beatles, Rolling Stones, you probably get the idea. I am definitely no where near a saint. This music is haunting. Just to think, before any popular or classical music was ever dreamt of, there was this. The human voice, chanting in praise to God. Very deep. No matter what your taste in music, buy this. The cd is perfect for those reflective times in your life. Times when you need to meditate and relax. Just let the sound encompass you. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely beautiful, December 23, 2004
This review is from: Chant (Audio CD)
These guys started a trend. Of course, gregorian chant records had been around before, but they had not sold so well. This CD took everyone by surprise. It actually is very nice! The singing is so beautiful, so spiritual, so calming. I think that since these guys are monks, the praising and praying does actually mean something to them, and therefore it sounds so true.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing CD, December 25, 2004
This review is from: Chant (Audio CD)
This is an amazing collection. The sounds are soothing, calm the mind no matter the mood. I would recommend this to a large range of people, from the longstanding fan of Gregorian chants, to those who are intrigued by some new wave things and want to try something new. All together, I can find nothing wrong with this cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sanctuary of Serenity, May 17, 2005
This review is from: Chant (Audio CD)
The Gregorian chant is a 1500-year-old a capella harmony of male voices that transforms any space into a cathedral-like, spiritual sanctuary. CHANT, the first (and famous) offering of nineteen tracks by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos (Spain), provides a warm and luminous glow of sound. One is transported to a place of quiet serenity, and the world-weary soul is rested. Those seeking assistance in initiating a personal, prayer-time may find these intimate, ecclesiastical chants to be just the accompanying inspiration they need to get started.
