Editorial Reviews

Recently hailed by DownBeat as one of the visionaries of the current wave, Craig Taborn has a unique perspective on creative music-making. Just as Avenging Angel subverted expectations of solo improvised piano, so does Chants find its own response to the vast tradition of the piano trios. The pieces that Taborn has been writing for the band in the eight years of its existence are set up to generate a new group music by channeling the special skills of drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Thomas Morgan. I knew that if I created a context and then deferred, fully, to Geralds and Thomass sensibilities it would inherently be stimulating and would also challenge the context. I wanted to invite that challenge: Id much rather engage with the group, always, than have the format be piano adventures with supporting cast. Morgan and Cleaver share the leaders concern for compositional shape and multi-layered improvisational detail, as the music is pulled between the poles of density and spaciousness, to dramatic and thrilling effect. Chants was recorded in New York in June 2012, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

I understand the previous reviewer's inability to connect with this recording, although I wonder why someone would buy a recording by Craig Taborn (even on ECM) and expect something else. Anyone who has listened to Chris Potter's group over the years, not to mention Craig's solo efforts, would expect the angular lines, dense harmonies, and forward thinking by this artist and his trio (Thomas Morgan & Gerald Cleaver). Regardless, this recording fully lives up to Craig's growing legacy and continues his journey on the offramp.

Four and a half IMPRESSIVE Stars! Award-winning jazz virtuoso keyboardist Craig Taborn's latest trio recording "Chants" is a marvelous, adventuresome acoustical mixture of original tone poems which allow pianist Taborn, and the talented duo of bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver to cut loose in what I would call very-approachable 'lyrical chamber avant garde'. The artist has stated he wants to achieve a "chamber ensemble texture" in his solo playing and that certainly carries over to his trio piano playing which expands even more so with his two cohorts. This is a musically rich recording that lures one back to gain insight into the music of an ascending artist who won three categories in the 2011 DownBeat Critics poll (rising star wins on piano and organ, and an outright 'established artist' win over keyboard titans like Hancock and Corea on electronic keyboards). The 'best of the best' begins with "Saints" with a mixture of classical and simple rhyme elements that swing mightily and shows Taborn's formidable technique. The repetitive propulsion of both "Beat The Ground" and "Speak the Name" tantalize and tests the listener's ability to hear minute changes amid a fusillade of swinging notes. "In Chant" is peaceful crystalline beauty with wistful solos by all concerned. And perhaps best of all a swinging blazing "Hot Blood" and the mercurial "All True Night/Future Perfect". Craig Taborn is one of the new lions of jazz piano to many of us, although at age 43, he's been building his impressive solo, sideman, and leader discography for 15 years now. Highly Recommended. Challenging and beautiful, captured on a pristine ECM recording soundscape. Four and a half INTRIGUING Stars. (9 tracks; time:64:29.)

Perhaps more than anyone playing the music, Craig Taborn's group somehow manages to thoroughly deconstruct the approach to jazz piano trio from the perspective of melody, harmony, and improvisation, while simultaneously remaining completely faithful to the tradition. Call it post-modern Bill Evans: on "Chants" Taborn, Cleaver and Morgan generally hew far closer to a lush quietude that you don't often find from ensembles featuring iconoclasts such as Cecil Taylor or Misha Mengelberg, yet there's no denying their virtuosity and total command of all styles of music, including avant-garde classical and free jazz. Commendably, Chants strikes an enviable balance in capturing so many moods, dynamics and beautiful songs, and by the end of the 55 minutes one is left with the impression that this trio can play pretty much anything!

This is a wonderful album by one of the most talented pianists of the past thirty years. It's taken me three months to hear many of the nuances buried here.

A trio album on another level. Repetition as ritual-transforming the listener. A must play. Saw him recently in New York and his solos are memorizing, as they are on this album.

As a human, I'm part animal. I look at Craig Taborn's photos, see his eyes and notice boredom and confusion, having heard the same in his music. Some people respond well to these; not me. I like to have a little fun constantly, resting occasionally which also I find enjoyable; even struggle eventually comes out O.K. But confusion leads to frustration, when boredom is added; imagine your computer suddenly freezing for a few minutes, as mine does, and you have a Craig Taborn composition/ improvisation/ concept (what titles!) in essence.
