5.0 out of 5 stars A New Proponent of the Canteloube Songs!, December 18, 2004
By
This review is from: Chants D'Auvergne (Audio CD)
Karina Gauvin may not be a world famous name among sopranos, but for those who have had the pleasure of her artistry in concert (as in her soprano solos with recent echt Baroque performance of the Messiah with the LA Phil guest conducted by Bernard Labadie), then this album will confirm her importance as one of the new singers to watch.

Gauvin owns a beautiful, intelligent, florid voice that seems to never need pause for breathing. The tone is radiant and expressive and never finds a location on her wide range that is uncomfortable. Cantaloube's CHANTS D'AUVERGNE have been recorded by such favorites as Dawn Upshaw, Kiri te Kanawa, Anna Moffo, etc but Karina Gauvin somehow makes them her own. The style of singing makes them feel like warm folk songs, much the way Cantaloube intended. Yet she is able to sustain the long lines with utter ease and toss off the fast songs with graceful aplomb.

This is a recording to own even if you have other versions in your library. It has lovely, unique sound ably assisted by the excellent accompaniment of Raffi Armenian conducting the Canadian Chamber Ensemble. A very nice way to get to know an important soprano! Grady Harp, December 2004
