Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bishop ( Sand Against the Tide ) scores a smashing goal chronicling the deadly games played out by the men and women connected to the Los Angeles Ravens soccer team. Bishop's passion for soccer and his belief in the value of sports keeps the reader rooting for the home team. Goalie Ian Chapel loses one eye and his career with Britain's World Cup soccer team when kicked during a game by West German player Kurt Wagstaff. Isolated by self-pity, Chapel nonetheless agrees to the request of his old SAS commander, Sir Adam Qwale, to investigate the murder of the Ravens' goalie. Despite his handicap, Chapel will assume the dead man's position on the team.. Returning to L.A., he finds Wagstaff now a member of the Ravens--a minor irritant compared with the big-league troubles served up by the sports complex owner, his two warring daughters, Irish terrorists, soccer hooligans and corrupt sports officials. Bishop's rendition of the play-by-play action is engrossing. In addition, a female goalkeeper for the Ravens is a fully realized character whose spirit and romantic appeal elevate this sports thriller beyond macho posing and the celebration of male bonding.

From School Library Journal

YA-- From the prologue to the final hospital scene, Bishop effectively captures the violent world of professional soccer. His tale, vigorous with intrigue, IRA terrorists, and a charming romance, focuses on Ian Chapel, a disabled English soccer player who is trying to solve a vicious murder. The novel begins with the career-ending event that leaves Chapel blind in one eye and emotionally crippled, and then picks up a year later when a second act of violence propels him back into his beloved sport. Through him, the arcane world of indoor soccer is made both comprehensible and vibrant as the story twists and turns in unexpected ways. For YAs who love the type of sports protagonist defined by Dick Francis, Ian Chapel will prove to be a most satisfying hero. A fast and furious read that's filled with plausible details. --Carolyn E. 4.0 out of 5 stars For soccer and mystery lovers!, May 17, 2000
By A Customer
Engene is such a pro at dramatization that it's a pleasure to listen to anything and everything he reads. This story about the often violent game of soccer takes place in Britain and L.A. Engene handles the accents, as he handles all narrative challenges, with ease and precision. The intrigue of the tale, involving a woman in a veil and a murdered goalie, are intensified by changes in Engene's pacing, breath control, and emphasis. Ian Chapel, a one-eyed British goalie, becomes an investigator in order to find out who murdered his predecessor and who's threatening his life. Very brutal and violent to some and definitely incredibly political, soccer and mystery fans will enjoy.
