Book Description

August 2, 2004 1844570371 978-1844570379
This collection of essays--the first of a series of volumes that will offer in-depth analysis and research on Charles Chaplin (1889-1977), his films, and his times--focuses on the filmmaker's 1940 satire on Nazi Germany, The Great Dictator. This film has recently attracted intense interest following its complete restoration by the Cineteca di Bologna and its international re-release for theater and home video. The Great Dictator is also the subject of a remarkable documentary, The Tramp and the Dictator, by the distinguished historian and filmmaker Kevin Brownlow, who has served as an advisor for this book. Other advisors and contributors to the volume include some of the world's leading authorities on Chaplin and early film comedy: David Robinson, Chaplin's principal biographer; Eric James, Chaplin's longtime music associate; Glenn Mitchell, author of The Chaplin Encyclopedia, and more.
