Editorial Reviews

The Count (1916, B&W): The Real McCoy, Sir Charlie himself, stars in this classic short as an inept apprentice tailor who makes a shambles of an elegant dinner party. Highlights include Chaplin's acrobatic dancing and an elaborate chase and brawl with the cake-throwing, bottom-kicking Little Tramp at the top of his comedic form. Starring Charlie Chaplin, Eric Campbell, Edna Purviance, Tiny Sandford, Leo White; Directed by Charlie Chaplin.

Don't Be Foolish (1922, B&W): The best and most famous of the Chaplin imitators, Billy West, is at his comic peak in this frantic tale of a park litterbug whose luck goes from bad to worse: chased by angry cops, and wooed by a spinster homely enough to make an onion cry. Even a brief respite in the apartment of a pretty girl turns sour: She's the wife of the angriest of poor Billy's police pursuers! Starring Billy West, Frank Hayes, Tom Murray; Directed by Billy West.

Heaven Will Protect A Woiking Goil (1916, B&W): A country girl goes searching for her missing drunkard father in the big city in this slapstick extravaganza, with roughhouse action taking place in shops, offices and atop a moving train. The lunacy culminates in grand silent movie tradition with hero and heroine tied to the railroad tracks. Starring Paddy McGuire, Priscilla Dean, Russ Powell, Arthur Moon, Louise Owen; Directed by John Francis Dillon.

I’m always happy to add silents to my collection and slapstick such as these are a major part of this periods films. It’s also neat to see what is in these movies as a time capsule of sorts. These three were not any kind of disappointment, even if they didn’t quite live up to the billing of “…his impersonators”. Having come across a pretty decent impersonator in another movie from this period I’m surprised that particular individual was not on this set.(But I see there is a second set...maybe on that one. [perhaps it was Billy West in that other movie I saw, but his impersonation here were not as striking: check my other reviews to find him as I did mention that impersonator before]) You only get 55 minutes of movies in three shorts so a fourth could have been added, but I'm still happy to have them all just the same. To me all Silents are desireable (I have 278 at this point in time) but I rate them based on thier merits as a movie as though I lived at the time because most people are fussy and would rather have a movie worth watching based on it's merits more than on it's historical value.

“Don’t be foolish” had a modest impersonator. The movie was fun and quite clever and original in spots, and the impersonations were discernable but not a complete rip off. The antics seemed to go on endlessly, but it was good fun, though it did tend to make police look like bunglers, but they did get their man, eventually, even if from no help from themselves.

“Heaven will protect the Woiking Goil” had no real Chaplin impersonator to speak of…and if he was there, the action out staged him.

Bit of a waste of DVD space. Interesting concept, but only 3 shorts, one of which is a readily available Chaplin short. Surely more than 2 "impersonator" shorts exist. If it had more shorts I would probably buy it. I'm sure there were several Billy West shorts released on budget VHS labels many years ago.
