"Pat Chapman's Quick & Easy Curries" is unlike any cookbook on the planet. Breaking from the traditional recipe format of "ingredients list plus step-by-step directions," Chapman assaults the reader with a fevered stream of consciousness delivery that dissuades the faint of heart. It is difficult to convey how bizarre and frustrating Chapman's writing style makes following a recipe, but these examples may be illustrative:

The first recipe is nothing more than a crude sketch of a tree bearing male and female genitalia as fruit.

In one recipe's ingredients list, Chapman launches into a six page diatribe of defamation against his ex-wife which includes liberal use of the "c-word."

Another recipe has a normal ingredients list, but omits instructions in favor of a lyrics sheet from Hawkwind's "Warrior on the Edge of Time" album.

Several recipes interweave with what appear to be fragments of a (hopefully) fictional account of a young boy's misadventures as a black market human meat butcher in Uruguay.

Generally speaking, run-on sentences, misspellings, and shockingly foul language abound. Furthermore, in absolutely every case where color illustrations of dishes are alleged to be provided, the photographs appear to be reproductions of Chapman family vacation Polaroids.

Despite these glaring issues, the recipes in this cookbook are positively first rate.

Perhaps no other cookbook is as confounding, yet rewarding, as "Pat Chapman's Quick & Easy Curries." The Curries themselves are indeed Quick and Easy (and Delicious), but Chapman's prose will discourage all but the most dedicated curry enthusiast. Still, once one deciphers any of the recipes in this book and gives it a try, they will understand how it earned the five star rating.
