5.0 out of 5 stars Not A Waste of Money!! One of the Best Female R&B Albums
This Cd was well made, I never heard of Syleena Johnson before. But for once I'm glad that I took the chance and bought this album. Every song one this album is good. He's Gonna Do You In #10 should be a single. She even wrote on most of the songs. Syleena Johnson will be around for a long time. R&B needs someone like her at this time.

While Sylenna Johnson offers us some much needed R&B today - in a world where it has the same textured beats and hardly any differences between artists - the album is fairly weak, but also quite good in some areas. She is more R&B in the soul sense, than say, most of the female R&B singers out today that are popular. The first single "I Am Your...

5.0 out of 5 stars I NEEDED THIS!, June 28, 2001
This review is from: Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (Audio CD)
I am seriously LOVING this CD!!! Syleena has the voice of an angel. I was going through some confusing things in my life and "Baby I'm So Confused" just really hit home with me, so it's my Favorite song. The entire CD is wonderful. I won't even attempt to name all the great songs though because it would be listing most of the CD! Do yourself a favor and buy Syleena's album. You need it in your life! I know that I certainly did! I Love You Syleena! Thank you for a wonderful CD!

As a fan of pure new school r&b I wasn't expetcing too much here, the only reason that I got was because I was loving the first single and I couldn't find it anywhere. If you love smooth singing and interesting beats, then you'll probably do good by buying Syleena Johnson's record, she's got some pipes on her that could put you at ease in any situation. Besides I am Your Woman, my favorite tracks are You Said with Liberty City, He's Gonna Do You In, which is almost funny and You Ain't Right, one or two more "happy" songs would've done this record better, you'll feel like crying in the middle of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Voice, January 6, 2006
This review is from: Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (Audio CD)
That wonderful Alto voice that sometimes reminds me of Angela Bofill and a soulful rasp that reminds me of Billie Holiday. The album is solid but I really wish that she would get better material because the voice deserves better.
The important thing is that she can sang. One of those Church singers but with lots of control.
If you miss real singers, then you gonna like this.

She is more R&B in the soul sense, than say, most of the female R&B singers out today that are popular. The first single "I Am Your Woman" is a powerful ballad which shows the range she can acheive with her voice. Other highlights include "You Said", "Hit On Me", "You Ain't Right", and "All Of Me". However, many of the other songs are on the weaker side. I think with the right songs she could create a stellar album. Overall this is a nice start, and I can't wait to hear CHAPTER TWO of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Is About Time!!, May 17, 2001
This review is from: Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (Audio CD)
Well it looks like adult R & B may be on the rise again. This album is the best R & B album by a female vocalist this year. All of the songs are strong primarily due to the urgency of Ms. Johnson's voice and strong lyrics. The music surrounding the aforementioned items is also good. Lately, I have not been impressed by the latest attempts at making R & B music. Especially when labels try to give less talented female singers the diva title. Artists and labels keep trying to make quality music and for some reason the music keeps getting worse and worse. If you are lucky you may get 3 or 4 good songs out of an album of 12-16 songs. On this album you get at least 8!! Ms. Johnson is definitely on point here! R & B albums that appeal to adults have been few and far between lately. We need more stuff like Anita Baker's Rapture, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, and the entire Rachelle Ferrell and Sade collections. This album is definitely on track in that area

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulfully Put, November 10, 2003

Syleena Johnson's album is a mix of neo soul, R&B,rock, and comtemporary gospel all in one album. Syleena's raspy voice and high and low range will leave you spellbound. This is the album that every music loving, free soul should have.

Chp.1 Love,Pain and Forgiveness gives you what you are looking for in a great album. With tear jerking tracks such as "Hit on Me", and "One Day", you'll be holding back all of your emotions. Then there are tracks like "I Am Your Woman", and "You Got Me Spinnin'", that should empower every woman out there.

With songs produced by R.Kelly and lots of other notable artists, this album is the best comtemporary R&B album I'ved heard in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had bought this album here! It's REALLY good!, August 2, 2002
By
This review is from: Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (Audio CD)
Syleena has a great voice, nice style and good feel. It's a shame that we didn't hear more of her on the radio or even hear her name as much as we heard that darn Alicia Keyes (Crucial Keyes my _ _ _!). Again it's obvious the industry is going to push the lesser talented, lighter-skinned, and musically bland individuals over those who actually have something to offer to the music world. Syleena was not given a good enough chance. At least not over here in Cali. I heard her song about 5 times on the radio and with just those 5 times, I knew I wanted to hear more so I can see if I wanted the whole album(you know how risky it is buying a complete album of a new artist after only hearing one song). But I didn't hear any other single besides "I Am Your Woman". Because of that I thought the album wasn't that good. But I wanted that song and I loved her voice (kinda a cross between Chaka Khan, Etta James, Patti Austin and Aretha...but different). Her bluesy sound with that mix of soulful R&B was a nice to hear in the midst of all this chaotic, big beat slangin', prissy thin voices, phoney styled singers in supposed R&B today. A woman out there with a husky voice and the knowledge to use it made me happier than a clam! I watched the price of Syleena's album on another website for about 5 months, waiting for the price to come down becuase I didn't want to pay full price (I don't pay full price for ANYBODY! Well....'cept Prince) especially if I only heard one song. When the price for the cd got to be affordable for MY standards under the circumstances, I bought it. I listened to it twice back to back and already had at least 3 fav songs (not including the single) and I totally enjoyed the rest of the album. The more I listened the more I liked what I heard. I didn't know R. Kelly produced her! I think the album is great. The appeal is more for the 30-40 ladies, middle aged ladies out there and the sophisticated 20 year-olds, and those who can appreciate a REAL singer. Now I feel REALLY guilty for not buying this album here or a record store. Syleena needs her props and her money. She did a good job on this freshman album and she needs her recognition, support and the chance to make another one. She'll only get that chance on record sales and publicity. Buy this album. Listen to it when you're in the mood for soemthing a ltitle different. Listen to it at least 3 times before making a decision (never base your opinion on something after just one listen). You'll like it. Tell your friends about it. And the interludes are funny (well, all but the first and last. they are kinda...well...corny and should not have been on there). All the songs aren't hits BUT they are nice to listen to, easy to sing along with and they have feeling. Then again, do they HAVE to be hits? No, they just have to be good. The songs don't have those cookie cutter grooves (bittin' the beat/sample Biggie used from somebody else) that are the shoe-in hits that most of these lazy artists or rather producers are puting out, I'm sure due to the push from record companies to make them bring in money. Syleena's album is original and fresh. Such a nice change of pace especially since R&B music is in a serious nasty rut. Now I'm commited to buying at least 3 copies of this album and sending one to my mom, my brother and a friend of mine who I know will appreciate it. Syleena PLEASE make another album. I'll be here waiting and willing to listen. It's time we give artist a chance due to thier talent not to their looks or their pull in the movie industry or because how good they look on a poster. And for the record...Syleena looks GOOD! AND she sings as good as she looks.
