A First -Rate Book,
By Sheila E Snyder (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chapter One (Hardcover)
I loved this book! This book made me laugh, cry and hold my breath. Vic Charles is so real. When I finished the book, I felt a personal relationship with him. I was deeply moved by the story for a few reasons. One, the memories I have of the Vietnam War and the sadness it brought into my family of 10 children. My older brothers and sisters lost friends and welcomed home battle-weary soilders. Second, it gave me a deeper understanding of the real tragedy that the war brought into many devastated families. This book takes a hard look at a man who tries to deal with the aftermath of the Vietnam War, day in and day out. It is a book written with a great deal of care and craft. I am looking forward to Chapter Two!

A Boomer Must Read,
By
This review is from: Chapter One (Paperback)
Having lived through the Viet Nam war with numerous friends and neighbors trekking half-way around the globe to fight in this war, Vic Charles brought this to life for me. I felt as if I were there with him. This story is well written, and reminded me of the sacrifices that our veterans endure for our freedom and the freedom of so many other countries. This story needed to be told.
It is a love story throughout, showing that love can survive against all odds.

This book helps you understand what it is like to be a veteran of war at a very personal level. It also offers a glimpse into the troubles someone with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experiences and the dangers that may occur without treatment. From a historical perspective, I had no idea that Vietnam Veterans were spit upon and rejected from employment when they returned from war. Thank God we have not disgraced our Iraqi veterans for what is clearly a governmental problem. I truly enjoyed the equal attention between Vic Charles life long after the war and the flash backs into his days in Nam.

I was deeply touched by this story about the Viet Nam War and our Vietnam Veterans and am embarrassed to admit that this is the first book I've read on this subject only because I didn't think that this topic would appeal to me. But Bob's book has proven me to be very wrong and I feel honored to have been given this wonderful story to read. This is not about blood and guts at all. It's more about hearts and souls and this story has touched mine. I can't remember when I've cried over a good book or a movie before I read this one. Once you get to the end you will all be able to understand what I mean. Please don't let this book slip by you.

Chapter One - The Story of Vic Charles,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chapter One (Hardcover)
It has been my experience that people who have been involved in war do not talk much about it. So when I had the chance to read Chapter One, The Story of Vic Charles, I finally had some insight on how traumatic war is for all involved. The book was poignant without being weighted down with vulgar language. It's a story I'd like my 8- and 10-year-old to read someday. Thank you to the author, Bob Staranowicz, and to all Veterans. They've put their lives on the line for each of us and for the freedoms we enjoy every day........tam

A must read book.,

This book was the kind that you could not put down once you began reading it. It made me laugh and cry. The writing is so detailed that I felt I was there with Vic Charles. I feel that I know him and I probably do in a sense because I have a few friends and relatives that served in Viet Nam but they never spoke about what went on, they were just glad to get back home. At the time of the war I was just a teenager and did not really get into the details as much except for what I saw on TV, when I watched it. Now I have a better understanding on what our men went through and they should all be honored. This book was about happiness, sorrow, anger and above all about love for our country and the writer should be commended on his ability to put all of his feelings into the writing of this book. I certainly will recommend it to all of my friends and relatives. I also am going to keep it in safe keeping so that when my grandchildren grow up that they will have it to read. Thank you.

Chapter One is the kind of book that once started you can't put it down. Vic's story gives you an insight into what our men in Vietnam faced, both there and after they returned home. This is not a book just for veterans, but for any one that wants to know what Vietnam was like and how it effected our men after they returned home.

As a veteran {Korean War} it was easy to relate to "Vic Charles", and gave me a better understanding of that war. It pulled no punches showing what it means to be up front {in the trenches} and the reprocussions of it later on in life. A must read for the younger generation so they may be fully capable of understanding what the meaning of WAR is.
