5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected, September 8, 2009

This is a great grill. But it's more than just a grill, even though the manufacturer doesn't imply anything more. Read on.. ..

The platform that the drum stands on is made of a thicker diameter steel than expected.
It's very sturdy, no wobbling. The lid closes tight, all the way across perfectly aligned, and came pre-assembled on the drum, a plus.
The hinge bolts seem oversized and heavy duty for such a light lid, another plus.
The grate is not cast iron, a big negative here, but it does lay down flat and tight and does not move when moving food around on it.
Grate height is at a good level. You can char-broil a steak, (minus cast iron grill marks, sigh),
or be comfortable grilling and not burning food for longer times when needed.
Another point to be made is that it even has a lid. Ever get rain halfway through grilling? Not a problem anymore.
You might get soaked, but the food will still be perfect and you will be the hero of the day, especially if at a tailgate party while everyone elses food just got ruined.

There is both an intake and an exhaust vent.
I changed the nut and bolt that hold these on, as you will actually need two nuts on each bolt, so once you set the tension on how hard/easy the vent moves, you can then lock it in that place forever. The vent covers themselves are simply a round, flat piece of steel that has been bent, forming the 'handle', to be able to move it. I bent mine up a bit more, to make it easier to move.
But the kicker is both vents actually work as intended. The intake is at the bottom left, and the exhaust is at the top right, THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.
And, because the exhaust vent is on the side versus the top, should it start raining, no rain will come in through the vent, yet another plus.
Anyone who has used a smoker before will be very pleased with how well this little baby can hold a temperature steady as long as you know how to use the vents. Yes, it's that dang good in this area, you can use it as a pseudo mini-smoker!

Light in weight, (no cast iron grate, sigh). It has a carry handle on it also, perfectly balanced when holding it. Another surprise.
No way to easily empty the ashes. Best to line the bottom with heavy duty foil, then cleanup is a snap.

I use a chimney starter to light my coals/wood. Because of the design, you may not want to start your coals inside the unit with charcoal lighter, as some of the creosote from ignition of the coals my work it's way inside and around the back of the drum. Just a heads up, get a chimney starter and say goodbye to charcoal fluid mess and expense and odor forever. Dump the hot coals in and go, it will be at temperature in two minutes.

The thing looks cuter than cute can be. Everyone will take a second look.
I swear I even saw it smiling at me one day.
It's not made in China if that is a concern regarding child labor, blah, blah, blah.

If you need a hibachi, you're a sucker not to buy this instead, considering the price range. All hibachis made today are JUNK under about 80 bucks, another product not made, 'the way they used to be.' (And no, the Lodge all cast iron hibachi that sells between 70 -130 bucks is NOT all that good, it has many flaws of how a good hibachi USED TO BE MADE, and the discussion of its flaws would take another post).
Save your money, buy a cast iron grate, and buy this instead.

You can even mod it out a bit.
It's worthy of putting it's own thermometer in the center of the lid, to monitor air temperature.
It's worthy of buying a cast iron grate for cooking on.

You can even do baby smoker sessions with this thing! Just stack the coals to the far left, near the intake vent.
Smaller pieces of Ozark Oak charcoal and wood chips can even be inserted through the intake vent, so you never need to open the lid.
Being able to use it in this manner is such a big PLUS that it puts it in it's own league.
No need to drill a hole for a meat thermometer either, just pass it through the exhaust vent.

Most of us down in this neck of the woods know a thing or two when it comes to outdoor grilling and smoking.
I've used many a different grill/smokers/hibachis over the years.
This thing is so dang versatile, and it fills a niche you didn't even know existed before.

Want to take it to another level and step it up a notch?
Buy two of these, cut the lower half out of one side on each of them, bolt them together,
and now you have your own seperate firebox, and with it's own lid to easily add fuel to boot.
Now you just doubled your cooking area, will be able to do full blown 3 to 6 hour mini smoking sessions,
and turned it into one of the coolest, cutest, most versatile, lightwieght small smokers you can have BAR NONE.

It still gets a 5 star rating, even though that grate is not cast iron.
Even with that flaw, I'd give it six stars if I could.
You can't miss with this product.

Nice size to take along but the food cooking in back is hard to get ahold of to flip over.
