5.0 out of 5 stars See for yourself
I am very impressed with this book. It not only gives you very important character building stories, it also gives you a story for every single day of the typical school year. My students enjoy hearing the stories and love sharing their own stories with their classmates. I strongly recommend this book to parents and other teachers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good intentions... but need more.
I was very excited to order this book. I couldn't wait to read stories to my 5 and 7-year old that focused on character traits. Problem is, the stories are way too short. Most are 1/2 - 3/4 of one page. Both children complained that the stories are not long enough. Honestly, I would be better off looking for picture books at the library that focus on one character...

Most are 1/2 - 3/4 of one page. Both children complained that the stories are not long enough. Honestly, I would be better off looking for picture books at the library that focus on one character trait, but have a more involved story that the children really get into. Great intentions, but falls short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Character Building, July 18, 2007
This review is from: Character Building Day by Day: 180 Quick Read-Alouds for Elementary School and Home (Paperback)
This book is just what I was looking for to jumpstart conversations about good character in my reading program, grades one through five. The stories are short, leaving plenty of time for discussion or written reflection.

This book is an excellent guide in provoking thought in my child. The stories target areas that encourage openness and reveal to me what she really feels. It provides opportunities to correct and guide her in what is spriritually right and wrong.

I much prefer non-fictional stories that focus on character building. Stories from Chicken Soup such as:
- Chicken Soup for the Child's Soul: Character-Building Stories to Read with Kids Ages 5 through 8
or
- Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul 2: Read Aloud or Read Alone Character-Building Stories for Kids Ages 6-10

Moreover, you can go to virtuesproject.com, get their list of virtues with definition, then explore each virtues with children by having them tell their experiences of living the virtues or their witness to such virtues. Last but not least, ask children what kind of person do they want to be, to become and ties them with these characters/virtues.

I'm a 3rd grade teacher and I can NOT wait to share these stories with my new class. I love the layout and the clearing defined character traits, along with their short stories. I can really imagine the positive impact this book with have among many students... and even teachers too. =)
