Format: Paperback
Collaboratively compiled and co-edited by Daniel K. Lapsley & F. Clark Power, Character Psychology And Character Education is an impressive compendium of articles written by diverse professors of psychology and presents a critical assembly of essays offering new views on the nature of character and moral education, drawing from the disciplines of moral psychology, moral philosophy, and education. Chapters discuss whether sports really can "build character", the rise and fall of character education in America, the question of how "moral learning through experience" in college shapes character, and much more. Carefully researched and prepared with strict attention to the latest psychological and sociological theory, Character Psychology And Character Education is a welcome addition to psychology shelves in an era when instilling proper character virtues in young people seems to be a more overwhelming task than ever.

Emerging with life is value. Value attaches. Attaching value to action we see not personality but character. We see the good and the bad, the strong and the weak, the virtuous and the vicious. Attaching value to the development of action and our vision expands--time and space enter our formal logic. Characters come to think about their thinking. Some work to conceive of the phylogenesis and ontogenesis of their evaluations. The system moves--from simple to complex, through modernism and postmodernism--but still character remains, still we strive for what is good and right. Amid noise and confusion, peace is ever present--here we perceive with clarity why discussion and dialogue continue on the nature and place of character in our basic and applied psychology. The creativity of nature continues.

The thinkers contributing to Character Psychology and Character Education engage us at the crossroads of discussion and dialogue. They harmonize in one respect: the choice of character. In choosing to speak of character, they speak to moral functioning more generally and accept that a deep understanding of moral character will entail deeper integration with all relevant psychological literatures. With a rich tapestry of insights, a flourishing of emergent systems of thought, and courage to embrace the challenge of consolidating coherence between sentiment and formal logic, the authors invite us to step up, choose our instruments, and join in the music.

Resonating throughout are echoes of Augusto Blasi's thinking (Chapter 3): moral character is embedded in self-identity, and an understanding of how self-identity is fashioned provides a fertile basis for thinking about moral motivation, commitment, and self-worth.

This is the best single resource I have located to date that brings the field of Psychology to bear on the realm of moral & civic education and character development, as fields of study within Education. The editors have gathered meaningful chapters, each thoughtfully presented, into a compendium of valuable perspectives on the topic. I would highly recommend this to students in the field of Education who are researching moral development or student development, as a valuable tool with its effective link to Psychology.
