5.0 out of 5 stars "Charanga Pachanga" is a classic!-Salsoul Connection Ol' Skool Rarities!, November 12, 2010
This review is from: Charanga, Pachanga (Audio CD)
RCA Records was the first label to contract two Latin artists, the late Tito Puente and later Jose Feliciano (his album "Feliciano" is recommended). Tito Rodriguez was contracted to United Artists (this album's original label) for this release and several others including "Tito Roodriguez Returns To The Palladium", "Back In Puerto Rico", and his greatest bolero album "From Tito With Love" (all suggested listens). "Componte Cundunga" gets the feet to tapping, while "Sobando El Son" really leaps out! "Ahora Me Toca A Mi" is a cha-cha, which inspired "Quitate Tu", later written by both Johnny Pacheco and Bobby Valentin for the Fania All-Stars and their movie "Our Latin Thing" (Vampi-Soul Distribution). This album that I once had on LP, like many other albums I had, ended up being lost in transit while leaving Florida. The invention of the CD made sure I would make up for it. To conclude this review, harken to the days of The Palladium and remember when Tito Rodriguez nearly practically destroyed the place from the monster act his Orquesta used to put on. Then again, a rivalry that cannot be comprehended was between Rodriguez, Tito Puente and the late Willie Bobo, for, probably, who was the Supreme Master of the Timbales. For me, all three knew their craft. Two of the Sons carry on the Legacy. I also forgot to mention Damaso Perez Prado, who also recorded for RCA. Rodriguez would form his own label, TR Records and record such titles as "Palladium Memories", "En La Soledad", "Algo Nuevo"(with the late Louie Ramirez), and "25th Anniversary Performance". Rodriguez would die from leukemia due to excessive chain-smoking after a concert. TR Records also had in its stable La Charanga '76, La Orquesta Novel, Las 7 Potencias (vocals by the late Nestor Sanchez), and Sublime. His son, Tito Rodriguez Jr. continues to perform to this day, as well as Tito Puente Jr. (West Side Records)
