2.0 out of 5 stars Not all stainless - get what you pay for, June 20, 2005
By
This review is from: Charbroil 463254405 Designer Series 40,000-BTU Grill, Stainless Steel (Lawn & Patio)
My father bought this grill against my recommendations.

It has in 8 months started rusting on the trim rings around the knobs, the screws/bolts, elsewhere. The rust water runs down the exterior making it look unsightly.

There are no heat-spreaders between the burners and grates, the flames are right below the meat. This is causes hot and cool spots.

Only the center burner has an ignition point - cheap.

There is no grease catching pan or system for this below the burner.

The side burner does work ok, if you get past the rusting parts around it.

It does work ok, but what this grill really is a poor "jump on the stainless bandwagon" but using inferior grade of parts and design. It will probably not last nearly as long as it should, but hey, it cost $200 less than some other grill. I'd file this under "pretender" grill - don't let the fancy looking stainless exterior fool you, its not really a super good design.

I have a DCS and while its $$$ the thing has never rusted a lick and I've had it 7 years. The JennAir looked head and shoulders above this grill.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry Charbroil I'm Getting Me a Webber!, July 31, 2005
This review is from: Charbroil 463254405 Designer Series 40,000-BTU Grill, Stainless Steel (Lawn & Patio)
I was very excited about this grill purchase but after a year, I'm giving it to my neighbor and I'm getting me a Webber. I was very dispointed regarding this grill. Way to many flare ups, lots of hot and cold spots, it takes for ever to clean this grill too. The igniter works sometimes but most often it doesnt and the worst part is the burners. Burner 1 gets a flame from only one side, Burner 2 works like it's supposed to, Burner 3, I need to use a match to get it to start.

Not impressed, I'm going to Webber.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Product, June 10, 2005
This review is from: Charbroil 463254405 Designer Series 40,000-BTU Grill, Stainless Steel (Lawn & Patio)
To my knowledge, Char-Broil in the past has not been rated very high, but this grill changes all of that. Quality throughout, it is a remarkable improvement over other models that this company has offered, and I rate it not only a best buy but a very well-engineered grill that you will be proud to own.

Practically nothing is made out of plastic or synthetics--its all high-quality steel and brass. The burners are really heavy duty and should last about forever. The grates are an unbelievable solid 5/16" stainless steel enacased round rods and are easy to remove for cleaning. I compared all the parts one-on-one to the old Ducane I threw away and this grill was superior in every respect. I bought the Ducane 16 years ago, and it actually cost more than this, one but the Char-Broil has it completely outclassed.

This model is offered under warranty to run on propane only, but I had little trouble converting it to natural gas using the old pressure regulator and quick-connnect coupling that I already had with the other grill. I then bought $5 worth of brass adapters at the hardware store, drilled out the burner orifices to 0.077", and in 30 minutes I had the grill running on natural gas. Most cooks would not do this, but the economy of burning NG rather than propane was more than I could resist. I estimate a $500 or more fuel savings in ten years.

Operating at only medium heat, I was able to hold a 390 F oven temperature. At high, I think she will easily hold 500 F. The side burner will heat up to a 6-quart pot without difficulty, and I noticed no drop in grill burner heat, even when the side burner was running high. Flare ups never occured while I cooked two sirloin steaks.

I was also able to just fit an old smoker box under the grate. That worked perfectly and smoked for close to an hour using soaked hardwood chips and sawdust. The swing-away top shelf above the grate works as well as it possible could. The potatoes and other longer-cooking veggies can rest right over the rest of the food while cooking and then they move out of the way automatically for turning the meat. Terrific idea.

This Designer Series, stainless steel Char-Broil grill is better than grills I have seen that cost $200 more. Would I buy it again? You betcha.
