Good price, poor build tolerances & reliability, August 5, 2009
This review is from: White Rapid Car Charger + USB Data Cable + Home Travel Charger for Apple Iphone 3GS 3rd Gernation Smartphone (Electronics)
Purchased two (2) sets -- 1 for me, 1 for the wife. Out of the 2 sets, I only have 1 working AC charger, 1 working sync cable, and 0 working car charger. Well, car charger works for a minute or so, then it bounces on and off (charging, not charging) continuously; both units appear to be overheating.
So, for the price of 2, I have less than 1 working set. The working AC and sync cables have a locking interface to the iPhone to prevent accidental disconnection, but this may not be the best idea either. ('Know the AC charger for Mac laptops? They're magnetic and release quickly in case someone trips over the cable. For the safety of the person as well as your expensive device.) It's not too easy to unlock the interface either... must squeeze and wiggle the cable off. 'Wonder how much wear this will cause to the iPhone's sync/charger interface.
1 star for a super low price, but we need these things to work properly first, right?

You Get What You Pay For, August 30, 2009
This review is from: White Rapid Car Charger + USB Data Cable + Home Travel Charger for Apple Iphone 3GS 3rd Gernation Smartphone (Electronics)
This is really super low end junk. It's been just over a month and the car charger has failed.
First it started doing the thing where the phone tells you it's not compatible / not going to charge which means that it's detecting the 5 volts but isn't getting anything on the two connections that would become the data wires if using the 30-pin to USB cord.
(FYI iPhones require either an actual data connection on these lines like when you plug into your computer OR must have about 2 volts on them. This is why USB chargers that work for other things like mp3 players and cameras will not work for iPhones even though they supply the 5 volts that actually does the charging. Without a couple volts applied to those data lines the iPhone will refuse to accept the charge.)
Anyway, then it stopped even recognizing that anything had been plugged in. I opened it up for inspection and found a broken wire inside the 30 pin connector. I fixed it -- the wire is extremely thin and frail -- but it still gives the non-compatible warning. On this unit the cigarette lighter plug contains the 5 volt regulator and the couple volts reference for those data lines described above is created by tiny surface mount resistors within the 30-pin plug. One or more of those has failed and it's time to call it a day on this piece of junk. Oh well...you get what you pay for.

does not work w/ 3Gs, August 27, 2009
This review is from: White Rapid Car Charger + USB Data Cable + Home Travel Charger for Apple Iphone 3GS 3rd Gernation Smartphone (Electronics)
Does not work on 3Gs.
If you have a 3G or something it might work on, save your $$.
Cheap crap is cheap crap.
I was able to get it to charge, providing I didn't need to use, by taking apart & pushing the electric part into phone.
Just don't get it.
