4.0 out of 5 stars Acid power trio, March 21, 2011

This review is from: Chariot (Audio CD)
Apart from pompous Hollywood-style cover artwork, highly praised by collectors, "Chariot" remains relatively obscure artefact from the end of the 60s. Some important guides to the history of rock mention that later it recorded as The Knack. Totally wrong!
"Chariot" started as The Knack; there were two Knacks in fact - first, better known, founded by Paul Gurwitz in UK (later - "Gun", "Gunsight" and "Three Man Army" Three Man Army - worth listening, by the way), while the second Knack were garage mods from Hollywood, who recorded a string of singles for Capitol in 1966-1968. That "Knack" was founded by Michael Chain, Larry Gould, Dink Kaplan and Ken Myers (later replaced by Britain-born drummer Pug Baker). The first single was issued in 1966, and the band turned out to be pretty influential and formed quite impressive following (although without major success). An EP was released "post-mortem", and might be available.
Do not confuse with the later "Knack" (of "My Sharona" fame) which was also recorded on Capitol.
"Chariot" emerged from the famous Hollywood Knack as a hard rock/acid power trio, very much inspired by "Cream" (that's what is said by most of musical critics, although for Amerian musicians there was no need to imitate "Cream" since powerful psychedelic trios were very popular in the USA - starting with "Blue Cheer" and ending with "Grand Funk", not to mention "Mountain", "Fields" etc, etc).
Musicians: Larry Gould (vocals, bass), Dink Kaplan (guitar, vocals)* and Pug Baker on drums.
Debut album was released on obscure National General label, and in spite of its rough energy failed to make it into the charts. In general it reminds very much "Creedence Clearwater Revival" (but less polished), while one song - "The War Is Over" - can be traced to flower power days.
Perhaps, it's not a must, but I like it very much, and it will please not only a completist, but an addict of the genre
* Kaplan's older brother played with "Mothers of Invention", and Zappa himself recorded on one of the singles with "Knack"
