I thought this and the other O'Keefe book, SENSELESS SENSIBILITIES, would be enjoyable little Regency romances, somewhat like the Signet Regencies put out in the 1980s and 1990s, so I downloaded both onto my Kindle. But after reading them I'm at a loss as to how to categorize them. Are they written for adults? Was the author seriously trying for a romantic and heartfelt story? I feel like I must have been reading them with the wrong attitude to have such a radically different opinion from the other reviews here. But they were not my cup of tea and I didn't enjoy them as much as I would have liked. The characters were unidimensional, the dialogue was not very inspired, and the plot was underdeveloped.

Terrible editing, poorly realized characterization, no historical references and anachronistic language meld together to make a thoroughly disappointing waste of money. I don't normally make an effort to squelch the creativity of any author, but please...spare us more of this mindless drivel. None of the characters had any character at all, and every one of them was fickle and foolish.

I enjoyed this story, it was well thought out and the story line was easy to follow. I would say the only part I was disappointed in was the ending. I would have loved a reflection of their future as well as Laura after he rescued Alice from the Inn. It was understandable that they would fall in love after spending so much time in each other's company. The story had intrigue, danger, suspense, betrayal, and romance.

I enjoyed this story. The heroine is charming. The story starts with the heroine, Alice, in dire straits: aged eleven without shelter, cold, hungry, with her mother dying. Baron Hawkins, the hero, seeing her shivering on a street corner gives her some coins. The background activity paints Hawkins as a kind person without much serious purpose. Alice arrives hungry and cold at the Baron's door. With his sister's help, Alice is raised as the Baron's ward. The path forward is not completely smooth, but there is a satisfying happily-ever-after. There is also a pleasant side romance of the Baron's sister Laura.

I read thousands of books each year and I can say that this is one of the worst books I have every picked up. Even though it is free I wouldn't waste my time. It is so slow with too many characters trying to figure out who they love. It is horrible.

I can't even finish the book and that says alot for me because I will trudge through to the end.
