This review is from: Charlemagne and Louis the Pious: Lives by Einhard, Notker, Ermoldus, Thegan, and the Astronomer (Hardcover)
Thomas Noble has gathered all of the essential contemporary or near contemporary Lives of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious into one slim volume. While the lives of Charlemagne by Einhard and Notker have been around for a long time in Penguin paperbacks, and Thegan's 'Life of Louis' recently became available in "Carolingian Civilization: A Reader" by Paul Edward Dutton, the new translations of the "Vita Hludovici" by the Astronomer, and "In Honour of Louis" by Ermoldus Nigellus, are are alone worth the price of the book.Strongly recommended for those interested in early Carolingian history. |
