I was given this book as a baby (that's why I think the 1978 publishing date must be wrong). Its ghoulish illustrations made a lasting impression on me. I can't hear about Little Miss Muffet without picturing a GIANT spider creeping up behind her, or Miss Mary, quite contrary, tending her basement garden of mushrooms with faces. What wonderful images I carry with me now--much better than the sickly sweet illustrations one would find in the usual children's fare. I think this book contributed to my delightful sense of the macabre in the world. Alas, someone stole it from me and I have since longed to see those pictures. If you can find a copy anywhere, quick, grab it and present it as a gift to your favorite baby.
