This book is intended as a vehicle to present Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846), archaeologist, geologist, zoologist, ichthyologist, ornithologist, lithographer and artist, in four ways. First, Lesueur is seen through the eyes of a long time researcher of Lesueur's life and work. Next, a French archaeologist and scholar from the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle du Havre, the location of the Lesueur Collection interpret Lesueur's work as among the earliest (prehistoric) archaeological work ever undertaken in the United States or elsewhere. Third, Lesueur speaks for himself in his letters to friends and colleagues both in France and the United States. And last, a collection of his pictures serve as evidence of the justice of his earned title, "The Raphael of Zoological Painters."
