Book Description

October 1997
In the late 20th century, many of the world's greatest architectural challenges lie not in the West but in what India's best known architect, Charles Correa, is happy to call the Third World. The architectural and urban planning solutions proposed by this architect have gained him a global following. His projects, fully documented in this volume, have been as wide ranging as they are impressive: low-rise, low-cost, high-density housing, entire townships and extensions to major cities, but also many individual schemes and buildings, from the Gandhi Museum (1962-65) to the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi (1975-90). This model study of an increasingly influential figure is completed by a detailed chronology and bibliography.

Everybody interested about architecture and India must read this book. Charles correa is a master architect that was able to mix a real contemporary style with the indian vernacular architecture. He is very concerned by the future development of the indian cities, some project show it very well. We can see in this book all the main project of his career in the first part with drawings and beautiful pictures. in the second part there is a cronological review of all his project build or not during his long career.

In this age of "fashionable" architectyure, it is rare to find someone who re-affirms the esential values of light, form and space, together with cultue, climate and appropriate technology.
