Editorial Reviews

Review

Circus hued, intricately drafted, these airborn objects are those that arrive in dreams, wheels and pulleys whirring musically, a great dynamo of effort that is belied by the gracefullness of flight. With its title-- Long Cross Cut on Wather on Land and up to the Clouds-- evoking both the engineer and the poet, the above imagioning of an airship and its uniformed crew (there's even a chef, it seems) signals the grandness of Dellschau's vision. (Albert Mobilo Bookforum 2013-06-01)

Whatever their historical value, Dellschau's works are treasures for their aesthetic sensibility. He's given us a visual expression of a time when the world realized that man might soon ascend beyond the terrestrial domain. "Renaissance paintings show saints and angels floating or flying around amid clouds in the same skies where Dellschau's angelic Aeros are suspended light as a feather," (Rebecca Rosen 2013-03-21)

This book on Charles Dellschau is a beautiful book. The book's description accurately describes the wonderful and important American artist Dellschau. Dellschau was a retired butcher who turned to painting watercolors around the turn of the 20th Century. He painted fantastic images of futuristic, Jules Verne like airships that did not exist at the time but were perhaps invented by a club he had belonged to earlier in the 19th Century. His drawings in addition to being quite fanciful and well-rendered, also are often quite humorous and often include relevant news clippings about the air travel of his day; in addition, since he generally worked on the daily newspaper, each piece is dated contemporaneously with its creation. Thus, Dellschau's works stand as true American art and antiques, visionary, dated and beautiful.

This book is the first extensive, fully-illustrated, complete tome on Dellschau and his work. The essays are quite elucidating on Dellschau's work; they put him in his historical context and also draw insights into his work's creation, background, meaning, philosophy and importance. Perhaps the best thing about the book, and frankly reason enough alone to purchase it, are the excellent, large reproductions of his work, which range from his exacting early paintings and superb diary entries and its drawings, to his later, more painterly works. This book is not only a fine art book about a great artist, but also a beautiful "coffee table" book that holds its own with any other large and beautifully illustrated art book for the general public, perfect to peruse at one's leisure and dream along with Dellschau as he imagines (or remembers) and draws the possible, fanciful and quite inventive airships of the future.

The only thing wrong with this book is the price !! It should be $100 or more! Make a great gift. A fascinating artist, well written essays and great reproductions. This was Thomas McEvilley's last book I believe, also very important !!

It was a nice surprise for me when I opened the book for the first time I found the detail in the image templates were excellent for the price and large enough for any novice to fully appreciate the visionary genius and imagination
of Dellschau..the hardcover choice of embedded lettering with black background for the hardcover added to the quality and thoughtfuness applied to this publication. .so for me it was definitely worthwhile purchase..
