5.0 out of 5 stars Dickens the master storyteller
Reading Dickens somehow unburdens your soul. Every character that he presents is a work of genius crafted with meticulous detail and intricately woven into a complex plot. This volume contains two of the best books of literature ie 'Great Expectations' and 'A tale of two Cities'.'Hard Times' and 'A Christmas Carol' are also enjoyable reads. For the price tis a delight to...

2.0 out of 5 stars Lousy Binding
I've read all but "A Christmas Carol" in this edition. I've found several typos. Moreover, the binding is becoming unglued. I estimate by the time I finish "A Christmas Carol" the binding will be totally exposed. I value permanent books (otherwise I would buy paperbacks). I suggest anyone who enjoys Dickens buy a better edition.

I can't believe what Frank said, you shouldn't listen to him. All of these books rank in the top 20 books of all time. His style that he puts forth in all the novels is of Victorian, so you have to be ready to be in for a little challenge. And unless you are braindead all of these novels should move you. Frank doesn't make sense, especially when he said that " I like books that move me" and then he gave us a look at good books. One of them was "Dreamcather" by Stephen King. Now, Frank, how in the world did that book move you?? Anyways, all of these books are classics, and very well written. And some of them seem a bit outdated because they have been cliched thousands of times. But like the saying goes, 'There aint nothing like the real thing."

2.0 out of 5 stars If nothing else, it looks good on your bookshelf., March 12, 2007

You would do better off buying these books individually from a different publisher.
It sounds impressive, leather bound, gilded edges, but it is very cheaply done. On the plus side, it does have a ribbon book mark so you don't have to buy your own.
But this book was poorly edited, filled with needless typos, and with all four of these books available from numerous other publishers, I would suggest to just buy it from them.

4.0 out of 5 stars For $20, 4 Stars, but if you plan on reading it, 2 stars., March 24, 2009
This review is from: Charles Dickens Four Complete Novels (Great Expectations, Hard Times, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities) (Leather Bound)
All of these 5 star posts, posted on the novels and the content. My post is on the book itself, not the classic novels.

These books are bound ok, but the paper used is very thin. You'll need to have reading glasses on as the type is very small and the ink from the other pages is visible through the thin paper. If you are looking to fill a bookcase for decoration and want the look of the leather books, then this is your way to go. If you are looking for a nice book, that reads well and is visually stimulating, then go for easton press or one of the other real leather bound books. For an even better book that will have a group of novels under one binding, look for the library of america books. For the price, they are probably the best way to get your hands on the novels at a good price and a good binding.

Since this book at retail is under $20, you be confident that you'll get what you pay for, just don't pay anything more. 4 stars for $20 bucks to take up space to make a bookshelf look nice. If you pay anything more, or you are looking to read this thing, well, give it 2 just because it looks good.

Great Expectations was a great book. It was very interesting and it was hard to put he book down once you have started it. I recommend that you read the book if you enjoy good stories about the changes of life.

We've been wanting to start a home library with matched sets of classics novels. This book and all of the Leatherbound Classics are beautiful. The text is clear and the books open wide for ease of reading. The leather bindings look beautiful in our little library nook. Make more!!!

Let's face it, there are better editions of Dickens out there. You get what you pay for. This is not a top of the line leather edition. For the price, though, you can't beat it. It is what it is, a reasonably priced leather edition of four of his novels. At five dollars apiece, the price can not be beat.
