More About the Author

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

This review is from: Charles Dickens - Five Novels - Complete and Unabridged: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for my husband for a gift. He likes Charles Dickens stories so I thought this would be great for him. He loves the book and has been reading ever since I gave it to him. Very sturdy hard cover book. We will keep this one in the family for years. There is a lot of reading, five stories in all.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK BUT BUY THE NEW VERSION DO NOT BUY HERE, August 26, 2010
This review is from: Charles Dickens - Five Novels - Complete and Unabridged: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations (Hardcover)
Barnes and Noble has a new leather bound edition of this book. Much nicer and only $20. I dont know why people think they can get over a $100 for this version. Its much cheaper looking, its not as if the book is out of print. So please do not buy here. Go to barnes and noble and buy the new nicer version. Took two stars away due to the unfair price as well as this version isnt near as nice as the new one.

This review is from: Charles Dickens - Five Novels - Complete and Unabridged: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations (Hardcover)
This is quite an accurate and huge book. Its not like reading the original, but its still awesome. It has all the details simplified slightly but does not cut it short or take details away. I am re reading some of the stories I read as a 14 or 16 year old; tell you what - even though I thought it would be boring to reading the same story from a different book again; it is still interesting, or in some cases even better. If you want to re read some of the classics or just some works by Charles Dickens, then buy this book, you will be satisfied if not very happy or blissfully content.
