Book Description

November 3, 2009 8 and up3 and up
This atmospheric, highly illustrated book captures the spirit of Charles Dickens’s classic holiday novel.  Here, the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s Christmas night encounter with three ghosts—and his transformation from miserable miser to warmhearted benefactor—is enhanced with stunning additional features: flaps, including one that opens to reveal Scrooge’s past; a large pop-up of the Ghost of Christmas Present surrounded by gifts; a tucked-in booklet of Christmas party games; pull tabs, and more.

Magnificent artwork and cleverly researched photographs recreate the vibrant yet sometimes dark characters of Dickens’s London.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Howard’s retelling of Dickens’ classic humbug-to-huzzah tale has a little more zip than a straight picture-book version would, though more because of the cartoony artwork than the somewhat underwhelming interactive page design (totaling three small flaps, one pull-tab, one pop-out, and one minibook). Especially noteworthy is the wrinkly old Scrooge, scowling in miserly disdain and gawking in horror at the various visions he sees on his eventful Christmas Eve. A swift, spirited telling with a handful of surprises to help spice up the read. Grades 2-4. --Ian Chipman
