This review is from: Charles Gayle Quartet (Audio CD)
Gayle seems strongest in a trio format (actually two bass players here)without piano. This is a little less focused than the "Touching on Trane" set. Though both are essential Gayle. While the Trane set features more looks back to Trane as a model The Knitting Factory sets find Gayle stretching out in Ayler territory. Songs are basic and titles reflect a spirituality similiar to Ayler. And like Ayler, all this serves as a jumping off point for intense group and solo improvisations.
