4.0 out of 5 stars Good biography by a man who knew Spurgeon, April 13, 2005

This review is from: Charles H. Spurgeon (Golden Oldies) (Paperback)
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), has a deserved reputation as being the greatest English Baptist preacher and one of the great preachers of Christian history. After a period of spiritual struggles he experienced an assured conversion of faith in Christ as his hope for salvation and it was Christ and the great Evangelical doctrines, with a Calvinistic theological
foundation, that he preached throughout his ministry. Spurgeon began preaching at age sixteen and by age twenty was pastor of New Park Street church in London. After great success there the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London was built especially for him and throughout his life his Evangelical message and vigorous ministry of many dimensions and large congregations never ceased until his health failed. Spurgeon was largely self-taught. He had a large library, was a fast reader with a quick mind and especially loved reading the English Puritan writers. Beginning with his ministry in New Park Street and continuing through the many years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, his sermons were taken down in shorthand and published with a wide circulation. Spurgeon wrote a number of works including an autobiography. There have been many biographies written on Spurgeon. This biography by W.Y. Fullerton, a personal friend of Spurgeon, is probably one of the better ones. It was first published in 1920 and has been reprinted by Moody Press. My biggest complaint about this biography is the lack of a bibliography, though it does contain some footnotes. But Fullerton's personal knowledge of Spurgeon and his ministry and his well organized presentation
of the life and ministry are suitable compensations. Fullerton also wrote biographies of Rev. Thomas Spurgeon, a son of Charles H. Spurgeon and of English preacher F.B. Meyer.
