Book Description

November 1, 2011 American Reformed Biographies (Book 5)
Charles Hodge (1797-1878) is regarded by many as the most significant American theologian of the nineteenth century. He drove forward the rapid growth of theological education and contributed to Presbyterianism's wide-ranging influence in public life. His advocacy of a Reformed orthodoxy combined with evangelical piety attracted a broad following within Old School Presbyterianism that spilled over into American evangelicalism as a whole. Hodge helped to define a distinctive ministerial model -- the pastor-scholar -- and his fingerprints can be observed all over the Reformed Christian scene today.

Review: This was a biography on Charles Hodge and his ministry. This is a great series to learn about those who have gone before. We live in a world where these biographies become more important to have an example of Godliness before us due to people moving, changes in the church and the breakdown of the family even in the church. Never before have more people been only been to church on Christmas Eve and Easter when they come to Christ it is through the lives of believers that we can glean the lives we wish to reflect upon for encouragement and example. Charles Hodge had a very dynamic life and his childhood was a model for our culture today to reflect on. It is important to have Godly role models for us to learn from.
I would like to thank Net Galley and P & R Publishing for allowing me to read and review his book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a biography January 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
One of the things that is essential to a good biography is a solid purpose. This biography deffinately has that, as pointed out by Noll in the introduction. The thing about Dr. Hoffecker's writing that makes it such a joy to read, is his attention to the historical context surrounding the facts he uses to make his points. This makes, Charles Hodge:The Pride of Princeton, a good introduction and starting point for several issues surrounding American Presbyterianism in the 19th century. Overall, this is a wonderful work that reminds us that we can not seperate men, their choices, or the principles they championed from the issues and problems that shaped the world they were living in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charles Hodge, The Pride of Princeton February 23, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found Dr. Hoffecker's book very contagious; the more I read the greater my desire to read further. The author took Charles Hodge's vast amount of writings and condensed them into an orderly, systematic biography which gave background information which enlightened Hodge's reasons, methods and goals for writing as he did. For me, I especially benefited from the sections on Hodge's two year European studies, especially in Germany. These sections gave me a much greater appreciation of the flow of theological teaching as influenced by concurrent philosophies present in Europe. This benefit was further re-enforced in the account of Hodge's writings in defense of orthodoxy against these new European philosophical theologies and how these new teachings eventually spread to America.
Dr. Hoffecker placed short preview summaries before major sections and a short summary paragraph at the end of these sections. This allowed almost anyone to follow the flow of the chapter, even if their knowledge of history of American Presbyterianism was scant. It is not possible to include every detail in a biography but Charles Hodge, the Pride of Princeton certainly gives enough for one to see that Hodge was a genuine professor of theology during a time of great change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading December 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
Written in clear and elegant prose, Charles Hodge: The Pride of Princeton reveals the author's deep affection for his subject and also his scrupulous objectivity as a biographer. Essential reading not only for those interested in fine biography but also for those interested in what Alexandr Solzhenitsyn called a "great soul."

5.0 out of 5 stars History Comes Alive December 4, 2011
Format:Paperback
With theology, it takes a skilled author to enliven what could be a dull story. Hodge made a statement with his life and written works. Dr. Hoffecker's pen translates this historical perspective to today's Christian World View. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Charles Hodge and his life.
