5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Expected
This product was purchased for my father, who celebrated his 83rd birthday. He has my grandfather's Elgin, but it just resides in a display. Since he is not warm about products from China or France, I have to check gift items closely. With no markings on the watch or packaging, I felt I was in the clear. Once he had open the gift and wound the watch, I was relieved...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch, November 11, 2010

It's a fun little watch, and it's held up so far. It keeps pretty accurate time, but mine looses a minute every couple days - not a problem though, just what you'd expect from any mechanical watch. My only real qualm is that the stem sometimes pops up and changes the time when I put it in my pocket. Although it's easy to tell when this has happened, you still don't know what the real time is. It doesn't happen that often, though, and otherwise it's a good watch.

Since he is not warm about products from China or France, I have to check gift items closely. With no markings on the watch or packaging, I felt I was in the clear. Once he had open the gift and wound the watch, I was relieved. The movement was so smooth you would think it was Swiss. Althought the watch is labelled PARIS, I am not sure where it is made. The bottom line is that, I think the watch is unique and would suggest it to anyone looking for a high quality mechanical pocket watch, at a reasonable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid product altogether, January 5, 2011

A little smaller than i expected, but a great value for $65.00 or so. The packaging was fine, there were no problems with it whatsoever. You should wind it every day, and its fun to watch the gears inside move. It looks like its worth a lot more than it is, and you should buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice for a ~$65 watch, January 24, 2012

I've seen several people here complain about their watches not keeping proper time. Hey guys: MECHANICAL WATCHES ARE ADJUSTABLE! If your watch consistently runs fast or slow (not counting the normal inaccuracy as the weather changes and the parts change size), then take it to a jeweler and ask them to adjust the escapement. There are two adjustments that can be made, one to re-center the rotating pendulum and one to lengthen or shorten the spring that makes it oscillate. If the spring is too long, the watch will run slow, and if the spring is too short, the watch will run fast. This is all perfectly normal. Fortunately, unlike battery-powered quartz watches, mechanical watches can actually be repaired. What a concept!

...and now back to your regularly-scheduled product review:

I've carried a pocket watch since high school; in fact, the watch I carried since graduating high school was a Skagen, who unfortunately no longer makes pocket watches. That one still works fine, but last year I got itchy for something new. I found this watch and asked for it for Christmas, and wonder of wonders I actually received it.

It's a very nice mechanical watch, lots of little moving parts to admire, and all of the fast-moving parts are mounted on synthetic rubies so the pivots will never get loose. (seriously, the gear teeth will fall off long before the rubies wear out.) Mine keeps time accurate to about 1 minute per week. Not bad for a $64 mass-produced watch that has no computer controls to keep it on-time.

My only complaint is that it has plastic lenses instead of glass lenses. I plan to take mine to a jeweler eventually, to see if they can retrofit it with glass lenses.
